My Schefflera is getting big

You are going to need a bigger plantpot..............
or a pair of very strong secateurs.

What is your secret? Mine is tall but spindly. I just took it out of it's pot. DH worked on the roots which were a mangled mess. I sanitized the pot (which is about the size of yours). We mixed compost into the soil. It's been about three weeks and it's looking a little greener. Its in a sunroom with north and west sun.
It has lived a long time, years, but has never thrived.

Memory trigger: The summer I was leaving to go to college I decided that I needed something green in the dorm room. I went to the plant shop and asked about something green that didn't require lots of fussing with. The lady showed me a Schefflera and said it was all green, no flowers, and all I had to do was throw it in the shower for a while once a month. That crazy plant survived four years in a college dorm and the first couple of years in an apartment before it finally gave out.
