My Sleep Remedy

There are so many negatives to NOT getting good sleep. Sleep is so healing.

I start my remedy about 2 hrs before I want to hit the pillow.

I probably started having sleep issues at about 61 which hit with Fibro syndrome. That was in mid 1999. I worked hard at getting sleep issues fixed. With the help of a friend, we came up with this combo:

7:30PM
1/2 to 3/4mg but it's now 1mg Melatonin (1mg Soure Naturals, break to get my dose) LOW DOSE works best with me.
500mg Inositol and or 500mg Gaba
Learning what works best for your body.
I've learned to work with these 2 "calmers" so use thru the
day too.

9:30PM
500mg Inositol and usually 1 Calms Forte' (homeopathic)

All the above can be adjusted for the person.

This combo gives me 8-10 hrs pretty good sleep.

I've never taken pharma sleep drugs and worked long and hard to get the above combo that works for me.

If I cannot get back to sleep after bathroom runs, I take another Inositol or Calms and this puts me back to sleep good. Lately, I don't need help during middle of night.

Besides Fibro "stuff", OA lives in me bodywide, and a mess from hip replacement in 2010. Left me with nerve damage, IT band damage, shorter leg....good grief.....

Oh, and 2 Ibuprofen at 10PM, so no pain during the night.

Lately with advancing OA pain, I've been adding Tryptophan and P5P about 9:30PM and during the night if I can't get back to sleep have added Melissa (Lemon Balm) and it works good for me.

Everyone adjust for themselves, try this and that, this is what I've done for years.

Make sure you never take NSAIDS on an empty or almost empty stomach!

Whilst I acknowledge the difference between "pharma sleep drugs" and Ibuprofen anti-inflammatories,
does anyone else sense a mild inconsistency here ?

And oh, "at 10pm" ? Every night - whether one needs them or not ? Sounds like a drug-habit to me ....... :)

Yes I do take 2 ibuprofen every 6 hrs..wish I didn't but I've been thru hell and back since late 2015 with knee staph infection and 4.5 months in hospital/rehabs...so I do have a lot of pain but take no other pains meds and as I said if only I didn't have this advancing OA. All started with hip replacement in 2010, everything went downhill and that's not the way it's supposed to happen, right? Not all replacements are a great success.

And I make sure I have food in my stomach with this pain med.

Gosh I'm so sorry for what you've suffered!
Good to know you're protecting your stomach lining and intestines from the NSAID damage. I wasn;t so smart- ended up with internal bleeding and surgery because of them.

I do use 1mg sublingual Source Naturals Melatonin for sleep sometimes and it's very effective. My husband will take an additional half is he wakes in the middle of the night. I don't have chronic pain, thankfully, but I think I would rather use an Aleve rather than Ibuprofen. I think it's safer to use and just as effective in the long run. Both need to be used with food in the stomach.

I have tried Aleve yrs ago and don't get results like from ibuprofen. j

I take a shot of flavored vodka about an hour before bedtime. If we're staying overnight at the casino, I have the beverage server bring me a small glass of red wine about 10PM. That's about the only alcohol I ever drink, and it makes me good and drowsy, such that I usually get a solid 7 or 8 hours sleep after taking a "nip". I resist taking Any drugs as much as possible.

I've only used Aleve now and then for a back strain or neck pain, but my pain wasn't that bad so I did get results. You have to use what works for you. :) When I was working and doing a lot of physical work and heavy lifting, I found MSM to be helpful in relieving the inflammation that caused pain....still take it today as a preventative.

I have resigned myself to the fact that as you get older you can only sleep 3 to 4 hours at a time or you would pee the bed.

So it's a good thing.

Oh I guess I'm resigned to getting up during the night...no wet beds for me. Last night I slept about 4 good hrs before the bathroom call. This way too, I keep my knees moving as they sure get stiff when in bed all night. I need and love my long hrs of sleep.

S.B. I have been taking MSM powder for years, two times a day, 1 tsp each time. WIsh it did more, but it helps.

Im so sorry to learn this about you RaddishRose. My stomach aches when I take anything like that so I don’t. Just cannabis.

This is my parents method of sleeping aids.
Since alcohols a depressant I don’t usually indulge but people need to do what works.

With alcohol I get a lot of weird and scary dreams, so there is no rest. I'm glad when I wake up.
That’s the same with me Camper. Alcohol does strange things to my mind and it’s also a depressant and I have a depressive disorder. When and if I do ever drink, the next day I have a mental hangover. I don’t drink enough to get a physical hangover but I can sure feel it emotionally.
Thanks, Keesha
Oh you are very welcome RaddishRose.
I can certainly empathize with your situation. Back in 2007 I got sideswiped by a double trailer truck that plowed into me at 100 km an hour. My gp put me on some wicked pain killers plus anti inflammatory drugs that just corroded my stomach. It was painful and they were addictive so I stopped taking them or anything else he suggested.
Those drugs are horrible for that.

Call it what you wish, I deal with bodywide OA and want to sleep good at night so this is what works. I'm now setting my bedtime for 10:30PM and that is when I take the Ibuprofen and there is still food in my stomach and I do take a cracker at that time too.

I got rid of tv so I'm not addicted to that tube anymore which kept me watching the tube sometimes close to midnight...I'm sawing logs by midnight.

I listen to either a sleep-inducing story-telling podcast (with a goofy host who quietly tells meandering tales), or a Youtube audio that is 5 hours of back-to-back BBC Shipping Forecasts (recorded by someone who was truly wonderful for doing that!) .
Most of the time, don't make it past about 20 minutes before drifting off.
Both work like a charm!

Have any of you ever tried to stay awake for as long as you can without sleeping.

I tried it once. I made it to 2 o clock in the afternoon of the next day.

I though it might reset my sleep cycle. No such luck.

I have enough drugs to contend with, so, a few drops of lavender oil here and there for me when I'm finding tough to fall asleep. As for pain, I only take something when it to the point I can't move, I have issues with taking any of the OTC aids so my docs recommend I use them only on a very limited basis. Muscle relaxants do nothing for my pain, they just make me more confused and tired than normal to the point they incapacitate me.

Artnaturals has a nice blend of essential oils for sleep, but, overall, I most often just use the lavender oil.
