My Watch Asked if I Fell

And yes, I did fall. I could feel it tapping my wrist. I confirmed that I fell and was ok and then it double checked if I was sure.

As much as I dislike falling, I feel a little more secure knowing I’m wearing this and will it help alert someone if needed. This is the third time in a year that I’ve fallen and it’s always asked. Because of my limited vision in my left eye, I don’t see impediments and this is probably part of my future.

A couple of times it has asked when I pounding a pillow to get it fluffy again. That’s ok too.

I have an iPhone and the series 5 watch. The watch does have to be reasonably close to the phone - being on another floor is fine. The phone can ring upstairs and I can answer it in the basement. Now there’s no rushing up the stairs to answer a phone.

Glad you're comfortable using that device Jules, I shy away from technology for the most part. Happy you're not injured, but at our age falling is scary. Please be careful as possible.

I ordered Medic Alert system back in March but have yet to set it up. It doesn't have the fall alert because I ordered the "watch" part but there's an extra button that can be added anywhere, like a bathroom wall, if I fall. I just don't want to start the $40/month charge even though I fell about a year ago. What convinced you to get it, Jules?

I recently bought the newest Apple watch (series 7) and love it. I had the series 4 previously. My balance is not very good and I do fall sometimes and the watch has always asked if I need to call for help. You really do not have to have your iPhone near the watch. I have left the house numerous times and forgot my phone but I had my watch on and continued to receive calls on it while I was out. It is really a pretty amazing piece of technology.

What convinced you to get it, Jules?

Because I’m visually impaired (almost no vision in my left eye & what I do have is wonky), I bought the watch as a safety device. I was thinking more about being able to make a call rather than the possibility of falling.

My balance is actually quiet good. Of the three falls, one was from a slightly raised lip on the sidewalk in front of the grocery store at dusk, the second was because a kid on a bike crashed into me, and this one was because my husband was doing a repair lying of the floor. I have very limited depth perception and just caught his foot.

I don’t pay for cellular data on the watch so need my phone nearby.

Jules, I'm glad your fall didn't hurt you. It's amazing how technology has infiltrated into our lives. When you , and I were kids, we never dreamed your watch would ask you questions, nor detect a fall. I just got a new car, and all the electronics , and safety stuff is mind boggling. And who knew we'd be all plying with computers? You can remember the 'good old days, but damn, I love my technology.
