My wife would be very unhappy with Amazon right now.

Grampa Don

Yep, that's me
The only Kindle she could use was the first one I bought with buttons for page turns. She could never get the touch screens to work right. She would get no turns or multiple pages. But she loved our original Kindle and we bought well over a hundred books for her to read on it.

I got an email from Amazon that beginning on May 20th they will sell no more books for that model and a group of other early models, including some Kindle Fires. I will still be able to download previous purchases, but no new ones will be allowed. Of course, they recommend upgrading to a new model.

Another thing they are doing that I think is kind of dirty: If you de-register one of these early models, you cannot re-register it. In other words, it becomes a paper weight. Since most people will want to de-register a Kindle before selling it, this means used ones will disappear from on-line sales. It is possible to jail break a Kindle and load non-Amazon software, but it's kind of a techy operation that most folks couldn't do.

If you have a Kindle that is an earlier version than the second version Paperwhite, this applies to you, and you probably got the same email I got.

Sorry I can’t help you
I hope you find something to make you feel better.
We don’t have Kindle
We have Kobo’s
Oh, it's no problem for me. I've never bought a book from Amazon for myself. I download free ones to my PC and can transfer them to the Kindle through the usb cable. And, I have a newer paperwhite that is not affected.

But, thanks for your concern.

Really, it's not surprising. What is surprising is that Kindles of that advanced age were still able to function with the advancements in the technology.

From what I understand, anything already on the Kindle will always be there.

Yes, they aren't erasing anything you already bought. The old Kindle is still perfectly functional and still a great reader. I replaced the battery in it, but that was no big deal. It's easy. The newer ones have more bells and whistles but accomplish the same thing.

The email didn't mention the Send to Kindle app, so I don't know if that will still work. It would be nice if it did because it's very convenient.

I have no idea why they are doing this, but it probably has something to do with money.

Looks like my Paperwhite is still in the clear but I'm unhappy with Amazon for continually leaving packages on my front stoop which is right on the sidewalk for ease of pilfering. Today I got a picture of a package sitting directly under the sign that says never to leave anything there. If they can't put it over my gate, just take it back or bring it to a locker. Got lucky today but many times things do disappear.

Well my daughter and son in law were closed out of their Amazon account by Amazon. They didn't have e books but they had many movies they had bought. All lost. They did not receive a good explanation from Amazon.

I too use a Kobo reader. You may load any epub book or pdf to it, unlike proprietary kindle.

I have a Kindle Voyage. So far so good, even though Amazon stopped selling the Voyage and there haven't been software updates in ages.

In addition to the signage, you can add delivery instructions to addresses stored with Amazon. Maybe add a note to place packages over the gate or something ... Amazon account > Addresses > Add Delivery Instructions > Add More Instructions (to write short notes).

I have a friend that lives in a multi-building apartment complex and Amazon drivers were leaving packages at the wrong building often. Once delivery instructions were added to indicate which building the apartment was in, the problems stopped. (For example: Building on North end of complex next to playground).
