My wonderful Rite Aid pharmacy closed

I liked this Rite Aid because the pharmacy was still run a lot like an old-fashioned pharmacy. They filed bankruptcy late last year, after closing a bunch of their stores in various locations because they're $millions in debt.

A big reason for the debt is lawsuits filed against them for not complying with new opioid regulations - mainly, they failed to withhold and delay people's opioid Rxs until the FDA approved them for release, which takes 5 to 10 weekdays (if you're lucky). And the FDA started making sure Rite Aid was last to get supplies of opioid medications, which caused a loss in business and additional lawsuits by customers.

I feel really bad for Rite Aid. I hate it that my Rite Aid closed. I'd gotten to know the pharmacists and the staff, they got to know me. I considered that pharmacist one of my care providers.

Anyway, there's a CVS right across from my Rite Aid, but I asked my pharmacist to NOT transfer my file to them. I don't like CVS at all. So he transferred it to Walgreens. I've had a Rx sitting there for 3 days, ready, but I can't take it home until some FDA agent "releases" it.

I've been on the same medication for nearly a decade. It's just so stupid! Or, as my teen g-daughter would say "So stupiiiiid-uuh!"

So, I looked up privately owned pharmacies in my area, and I found one! It has excellent reviews, tons of them, and it's like 5-minutes from my house. So I'm gonna go in there next week and ask them to get my file or whatever, and take me as a customer. I think I have to get a release of medical info form signed by my doctor, or maybe that's done electronically, idk. But I'll do whatever, no biggie.... good as done.

Same on both points. Mine is still open though. CVS gives me the shudders, might as well be Walmart with its high turn-over robotic staff and the feeling you need a shower after escaping.

I lost two Rite-Aids in my area in quick succession. It's never quite the same because you get to know everyone so well. :cautious:

It really chaps my hide that the FDA is so far up my in matters that are between me and my doctor. The FDA has the tools to nab doctors who over-prescribe and the addicts who shop around for them. Pharmacists report over-prescribing, and have done so for decades. They can lose their license if they don't.

I'm just saying this is over-reach that effects businesses and patients, and it's totally unnecessary. It's redundant, and I am certain a group of high-rolling investors is behind it.

Our Rite Aid has been sucking air for years
Their shelves have huge gaps
And the pharmacy is picky on what insurances they accept

It's just a matter of time, here
This has been a slow burn for decades. Mom & Pop's pharmacies got squeezed out by Rexall because they had everything from drugs to sundaes, then Rexall got squeezed out by the likes of Rite Aid and Walgreen's, and now the squeeze is on them by the FDA, a gov't agency.

And we know where this eventually goes, right? Capitalism without private businesses is not capitalism.

Exactement! (y)

All the ones around here closed. One is a plasma center now.

I use a pharmacy called Sav-On in my local Albertsons grocery store. That way I can pick up my prescriptions and shop for groceries. I receive texts from them when my prescriptions are ready.

The staff there takes their sweet time acknowledging any customers waiting at the counter and they have very little personality, but it still takes less time than going to a separate location. There was one pharmacist who was friendly and called me by my name but she is long gone. They are good about contacting my doctor if I need refills.

I used a pharmacy inside a local grocery store for a few years. Then it closed. I loved the convenience.

Could you please explain, for this Canadian ? What is a plasma center ? What service does it provide to the public ? JimB In Toronto.

A smaller Rite Aid close by changed to Walgreens. I'm glad it's still open as I sometimes stop in.

Hate CVS. Hate. But I like them because they will take my credit card for a purchase as low as fifty cents.

I have transferred my opioids etc type meds to a local pharmacy, an outfit run by Russian women. I would use them for everything, but I can't use my credit card for small purchases like my co pays. Hate having to deal with small cash purchases, don't like to be stuck with coin change, can't really use coins anymore.

If I'm not mistaken CVS acquired Rite Aid a few years ago. They have been quietly closing stores (Rite Aid or CVS) depending on which brand was doing better in an area or because one had a better location than the other. We abandoned CVS years ago, partly because of the location, but more important to us was the rude behavior of a long term employee. Customers don't have to put up with them, we voted with our dollars.

You might be thinking of Walgreens.
Your memory is great. I consulted Google who knows all. In 2015 Rite Aid and Walgreen were cooking up a deal that the powers that be scuttled. Later on Rite Aid sold 1900 stores to Walgreen in a deal that was approved. Thanks for the giving my bad memory a niggle.

The ones at my local CVS are rude. They act like they're your only option for getting a Rx filled. And it looks like it's coming to that.

I found a non-corporate family-owned pharmacy just a short drive from my house. I'm gonna go talk to them, see if they need me to transfer my file or whatever. Also need to ask if they ever have opioid shortages. I'm expecting a yes on that. I'm betting CVS and Walgreens always get theirs first, and they over-order if they can, to squeeze out the little guys.

Not around here. All the antekas, the Russian pharmacies (and they are legion) have them while CVS, etc. are too scared of running afoul of state laws and being sued again.
