Interestingly, the Hebrew Old Testament
was translated into Greek [Septuagint]
in Alexandria during this time.

Ptolemaic-Era Black Granite Sarcophagus Discovered in Alexandria

July 5, 2018

" A black granite sarcophagus was recently uncovered in the Sidi Gaber district of Alexandria, Egypt, reports Rob Waugh at Yahoo News UK. The most exciting part? A layer of mortar between the lid and the rest of the tomb indicates that the coffin hasn't been opened in 2,000 years, which is rare in Egypt where looters have picked through tombs and burials for millennia.

The ancient sarcophagus was found by local authorities during standard archaeological excavations conducted before the construction of a new building on Al-Karmili Street. It was found approximately 16 feet below ground. A rough alabaster bust of a man, likely a depiction of the body in the coffin, was also discovered in the tomb, which is believed to date from the era of the Ptolemies, the Greek royal family dynasty that ruled for roughly three centuries from 305 to 30 B.C.E.

According to the Ministry of Antiquities, the tomb is about 8.6 feet long and more than 5 feet wide. Mostafa Waziri, general secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, says it is the largest sarcophagus ever excavated in the city. "

fascinating KingsX - I have a good friend who is Egyptian and keeps asking me to go to Egypt with him - if I did I may never return!! - an amazing country with an amazing history into which is woven biblical stories! but I'll stick to the topic. I watched a recent documentary of a well known female Egyptian archeaologist who I think was hot on the trail of the tomb of Cleopatra but was being thwarted somewhat by the authorities?? - I watch and read so much I should keep notes [makes not to himself!]

:eek:nthego::excitement:

When I saw that photo, my first thought was "time capsule"...
then I remembered how that era in Egypt relates to the Bible.

I have always been fascinated by Egypt and would love to have gone there and seen the pyramids, etc.; however I refuse to contribute to the economy of a country/society that treats women like property.

2.000 years, hope they were dressed in clean socks and underwear before they were planted/interred.

2,000 years undisturbed, we'll get to see what many grave robbers saw.

Thank you gumbud for this interesting update:

" But opening it for the first time will require extensive work to be done in advance. "It’s risky to open it directly - we need to prepare," said Ashmawy, explaining that the sarcophagus would be opened on site.

"It's difficult to move it intact and open [it] in a museum," he said. "It’s five metres underground and the whole thing weighs over 30 tonnes. The lid alone is 15 tonnes."

In the coming weeks, a team of engineers will visit the site to provide heavy lifting equipment and structural supports to allow archeologists to remove the sarcophagus lid. Once inside, mummification and restoration specialists will be on hand to ensure the contents, exposed for the first time in millennia, are preserved."

I read someone's guess that it may contain the remains of Alexander the Great. I can;t remember which site though.

On Hatshepsut, I saw a documentary about her some years ago; thought it was interesting she wore a fake beard!

Gotta wonder just how many such things are buried , all over that region?

If we listen to & believe all the historians ? Strange that all the rest of the world is so much older than America. Seems to be even a significant difference between north & south America. I suppose it could be a simple as not needing the room? Mankind population continued to grow, so need more space?

Not to mention all that the earth is flat / fall off stuff :)

Won't be long folks in the future will need more space , the way were going.

Back in the 70s, I remember reading an "alternative theory of history" type book by a Frenchman [can't remember the title.] In the book, he theorized that history is cyclic and sometime in pre-history there was an advanced civilization in North America but it was totally destroyed in a war by an advanced super weapon that existed at that time. He theorized that most of the North American population was destroyed and when the few survivors migrated south, telling stories of the massive destruction, a taboo of entering North America was created.

Even if one doesn't buy that wild theory... instead of a war, maybe there was a massive natural disaster or devastating disease. For example, the ancient Anasazis, who once built impressive thriving cities in the American Southwest, suddenly mysteriously disappeared from history.

I live near the city of Rockwall, Texas [county of Rockwall.] The name comes from a mysterious underground rock formation that looks very much like an ancient man-made wall. Sections of this "wall" can be found in numerous places in the area. Local residents thought the wall was man-made. But modern geologists say it is a natural formation, so interest in the wall has waned the past several decades. I've seen a section of the wall, indeed it does look man-made.

It's the monolith from "2001 Space Odyssey".

Good thinking! In the movie, the black monolith was buried on the moon.

Btw.. I first saw the movie, 2001, in an awesome movie theater in Hollywood summer 1968.
I was 16, flew [first time on a plane] by myself to visit my brother at Cal-Tech. He took me
to see the movie. He explained the movie to me as Nietzsche's "man and superman."
The movie's famous music score is Richard Strauss' "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" which is
also the title of Nietzsche's famous book about man and superman.

Ironically, my brother left Cal-Tech that year and became a NASA scientist at Houston's
Spacecraft Center. He helped create the lunar analysis lab for the upcoming Apollo moon
missions. He retired after 42 years with NASA.

I heard something about the wall King...and I agree it surely does look man-made IMO as well.

As for the Frenchman's theory ? Of course who knows for sure?...No one. Going back in time to before recorded history & anything is possible,....and could be on the evening news any day.....

As for......

"American Southwest, suddenly mysteriously disappeared from history."

Some hold strong to the belief in 'visitors' ? invading. That theory is as reasonable as any I suppose. I hold tight to the 'possibility'....since [so-far] no indisputable proof one way or the other has been disclosed...........jmo

Have you seen Mesa Verde, the giant cliff dwellings built by the mysterious Anasazi ?
We visited there on a family vacation when I was a child.

This is quite a commentary on modern society...
ancient mummies' tomb ruined by city's sewage.

Mystery sarcophagus has been opened in Alexandra revealing three skeletons
and liquid sewage that had seeped into the tomb decomposing the three mummies
which may have been warriors.

The irony... " Addressing media fears that disturbing the tomb could trigger an implacable Pharaoh's curse,
Mr Waziri declared: "We've opened it and, thank God, the world has not fallen into darkness."

LIVE UPDATE: Opening of ancient sarcophagus in Alexandria

Thu, Jul. 19, 2018

" Waziri remarked that experts from Upper Egypt have participated in opening the coffin; he further revealed that the red liquid was found to be sewage water that leaked inside the coffin through a crack in its eastern side, causing the decomposition of the mummies.

In the same context, Alexandria Governor Mohamed Sultan told Egypt Today that the three mummies will be moved to the Alexandria National Museum, while the coffin will be transferred to the Military Museum located at the military northern region.

Three decomposed mummies were found in the sarcophagus, declared Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa Waziri.

Waziri stressed that none of the three mummies belong to a Ptolemaic or Roman royal family and the coffin does not have inscriptions or a cartouche bearing their names.

He further pointed out that no evidence such as silver or gold metallic masks, small statues, amulets or inscriptions were found to prove that the mummies belong to a royal family.

In this regard, he denied the rumors spread by some international newspapers that opening the sarcophagus would unleash the curse that would bring disaster to the world. "
