Mysterious White Dust

I ran across an article about this odd occurrence. I thought it might interest some. It may even stir up some conversation on a Saturday night. My first thought was snow. My second thought was volcanic ash. Although I do not know of any volcanoes that are erupting that could spread ash into West Virginia and Maryland. Interesting news none the less. Your thoughts? A hoax?

well you say that , but when a Volcano erupted in Iceland some years ago.. it caused havoc all over Europe, and flights were cancelled for days. We were at our Casa in Spain, and everything including the pool at our gated community got covered in this very fine powder ( ash).. all the way in Spain...

A state lab in West Virginia will test the dust to determine if it’s related to recent dust storms in the Midwest, the Department of Environmental Protection statement said. Dust from storms in Texas and New Mexico traveled east through Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky on Thursday, according to satellite images captured by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association.

We sometimes see something similar, several times a year in the UK. But only usually during spring and summer. The colour I see here is usually a very light yellow, or sometimes a brown-orange. In the UK it’s thought to come from a "Saharan dust event". Very fine dusty partials of sand blown north from the Sahara and remain suspended for days in the air, then settle hundreds or a couple of thousand miles away.
 
My first guess would be the wind currents carried the ash from that derailed train in Ohio since there have been reports of a slight chlorine smell. I don't buy the dust storm theory because this ash was awful white and all the dust storms I've ever seen have been muddy brown in color.
One has to wonder why the govt. didn't just do a spectrum analytic soil test on the ash right away. Seems like the logical step.

yes we get the Sahara dust a lot in Spain, it's really horrible because it stains the white walls of the house, and all the stone Terrace furniture.. usually soon after the house has just been painted which is every 7 years , conversely we only occasionally get it here in the south of England but then it's usually brought by the rain...

The "white" ash showed up on Thursday evening, the 23rd. Light does wondrous things with particulate, even making frozen water look white, when crystalized.

Some of the dust was transported from White Sands NM -- as the name implies, the gypsum sand at that location has a distinct white color.

If I lived downwind of East Palestine, I would be very edgy, and hope not everything is train wreck related. I think this is not train related.

On a side note... I might consider pulling out the old Geiger counter, considering White Sands was the site of Trinity, or the very first a-bomb. Said with a half hearted laugh.

near Las Cruces. Theories, but no real explanation. This seems quite similar.
I've held it in my hands. It's a white gypsum formed into thousands of acres of sand dunes.

What might be YOUR explanation, @oldpop? If you have explored your inner space,
you would know. You think this is formed by chemicals in the air?

I spent a lot of time in my life trying to get definite answers to things like what came first the chicken or the egg. I finally came to the conclusion that just about everything I think I know as fact is actually theory and in reality cannot be proven. Heck I do not really know if what I perceive as reality is real. There is very little that happens these days that I have a good solid explanation for. Most of it seems insane to me. My answer to your question would be pick one. They are so many variables. All are possible if not probable.

It's obvious! A drug's bust went wrong and now it's scattered to the four winds. Roll up a long piece of cardboard into a tube, place one end of the tube onto the mysterious white dust and the other end of the tube into your nostril. Inhale deeply through your nose.

Are you away with the fairies yet?
