Sounds like a case for Miss Marple.

Garden gnomes are mysteriously turning up on business rooftops across the Adelaide Hills under the cover of darkness.

The gnome invasion comes after about a six-year break and they have been spotted in Blackwood, Belair, Glenalta, Coromandel Valley and Hawthorndene.

The silent little men first appeared in Blackwood in about 2003 and have made unannounced appearances ever since.

A secret group known as the Gnome Rangers has previously claimed responsibility for pranks including a 2009 operation but denied the latest outing was their work.

Artisan Cafe owner Heather Holmes-Ross said the Blackwood community loved the little statues and the mystery behind them.

I think that is cute! In the last painting I started (I'm very slow and it takes me forever to finish) has a cute little gnome in it. He is pushing a wheelbarrel of flowers around my daughter's back yard. It took me so long to finish the painting she has since moved to a different house.
