Nasal irrigation, anyone?

Has anyone tried nasal irrigation by means of a nemi pot or Navage device? If so, did it work for you, and have you continued with it? I have allergies and post-nasal drip, and wonder if one of these devices would be helpful. The Navage device runs close to $100 plus you have to use salt pods with it, so I would like to hear from some folks who've tried it to see if it would be a worthwhile experiment.- -Thanks!

I use a Nettie pot during allergy season and it does help quite a bit. I have had it for so long that I don’t remember where I got it, but it wasn’t anywhere near as expensive as what you are considering. The salt is easily obtained at a drugstore and is cheap. Mine is made out of ceramic and it goes straight into the dishwasher every night if I have used it. I tried one of the plastic ones and did not like it.
Overall I am very happy with mine and it does help me a lot.

I used a neti pot years ago for a short amount of time. I completely stopped when I started having pain by my eye, and one time the next day at work water dripped uncontrollably from my nose, it obviously did not all drain during the treatment. Luckily there was nobody around and the water did not damage anything. I still have the pot stored away, won't ever use it again. I joked with my husband that if I got hard up, I might use it for a creamer some day, lol. I don't recommend it.

Tried both neti pot and Navage. My ENT said if I was going to waste my time, be sure to use distilled water. Can't say it ever helped and may have actually caused problems in my Eustachian tubes, although my ENT said that was not possible.

20+ years ago, I used to buy the 0.9% saline solution from the pharmacy. I used large syringes (without needles) to apply the liquid.

Then I moved to another place, where they wouldn't sell the saline without a prescription 😲. So I learned to make my own. The ratio is easy: 1 teaspoon NON-iodized salt, 500 ml of boiled water. (Let it cool before using.)

Eventually I stopped using the syringes. I'd just scoop the solution in my hand, and snort it.

No problems, other than being a bit nasal drippy for an hour or two. So, do it before a quiet night at home.

No real advantage that I could see, although I was told that ENTs recommended it. Haven't done it for a few years.

That is a concern that has made me hesitate to use either a Navage or Neti pot, I already have problems with my right Eustachian tube.

Oddly, if I exceed the doctor's recommended dosage of Fluticasone, it seems to help. It was actually a result of him telling me to up the dosage for a short while, to overcome brief periods of dizziness. It worked for that and suddenly I could hear out of my right ear. I did cut back the dosage and now the right ear is clogged, but no dizziness.

In Nepal, India, yogis use this, but no expensive gear, just a plastic tube or string

They manipulate one side to the other or nose to mouth....

This has been my experience as well. I don’t use a neti pot often but it is helpful when I do.

I have used it many times, but found out not good to use to often because when killing bad bacteria also killing the good bacteria. I searched it that's where I got the information. I won't use it any more because last time I got bad sinus headach for a couple hrs.

Personally, I think Navage is just a money-making gimmick. One more dedicated appliance. I was introduced to the neti pot and “jala neti” (“nose water”) by a Hindu. In his practice of Hinduism it’s a regular ritual. So he provided me with a pot to practice and relieve stuffiness from hay fever. Tap water, about a teaspoon of salt, and you’re good to go. He showed me how to gently blow the water out my nose after a treatment (gently so as to avoid blowing out an ear drum) and I’ve never had a problem with water running out my nose later. Pot costs about $3.50 online, or did.

I just use it when I need it.

Thank you all for your perspectives! I don’t think I’ll rush into a $100 Navage system yet, which sounds like a power pump and might cause more problems than it solves. I’ll see my doc in about two weeks, and see what he thinks. He’s Indian, so may have a cultural perspective. Until then, I think I’ll play it safe and just try some OTC saline sprays to see if it helps the allergies, post-nasal drip, and gunk at the back of my throat…

Every time I would go out for a jog, or play a game of pickup basketball, or any type of activity, my nose would run. The doctor hesitated putting me on antihistamines. All they did was to make me tired, so I stopped using them. I went out and bought a Navage, which also didn’t help with that issue, but I was kind of surprised how much better I could breath. I was using it about once every 2 weeks, unti one day when I dropped it and it cracked and broke a few parts off of it. I won’t buy another.

I think my nose issues came from wearing what we call a “bone dome” or flight helmet. They do have a reputation of causing issues with runny noses or the opposite of the sinus cavities becoming dry.
