"Paging through comic books," yes but I was not allowed to read the superhero kind. I don't consider myself to have been over protected or sheltered. I was given a lot of freedom to do things on my own that were much more dangerous than reading Superman, but I did have a stack of Little Lulu, Donald Duck, and Casper the Friendly Ghost that my parents approved of. Today, as an adult, I own every Marvel movie video from the last 15 years. It's probably because of my deprived formative years that I am now enjoying the much forbidden fruits of my youth.
