National Orange Blossom Day - June 27th

I'll never forget my first smell of orange blossoms.

It was early March and we had flown to Orlando on vacation. We barely got out of Detroit because of a terrible ice storm there. Landed exactly at midnight in Orlando. Back then, the airport was a little dinky thing surrounded on three sides by orange groves. You had to walk down the steps and cross the tarmac to reach the terminal.

The temperature was warm and moist. The air felt like velvet. The smell of orange blossoms was overwhelming, intoxicating. Welcome to Florida.

I remember kneeling down and kissing the pavement.

To this day, the smell of orange blossoms sends my spirits soaring.
