National Sausage Pizza Day - October 11th

There's sausage and then there's pepperoni. Sausage has always been my favorite. I used to specify "cheese and sausage," but as pepperoni gained popularity in pizza, sometimes the cooks just used pepperoni and served it as sausage; "There you go, Sir, sausage!" Not wanting to argue terms, I ate it, but I always felt gyped. The thing is that Italian sausage has a very distinct taste that pepperoni doesn't have, or if that mystery ingredient that makes the sausage so special is in fact in pepperoni, it's overpowered by hot spice.

Call me a pizza pedant.

How I survived eating all the sausage pizzas I have is a miracle. :) I liked beer before the pizza but I had to have coke or pepsi with the heavenly slice! Go figure. :)

The Pizzafest hosts many events where the judges decide on the best pizza in the world. The most famous pizzerias from all over the world compete against renowned local pizzaioli, who set up stands with tables where people can sit and taste different varieties of pizza. You can see chefs showing off their talents, making pizza for visitors on the spot, and showing the process as well.

There are many conditions and criteria for this competition. To win the best pizza of the year competition, the pizzas are judged on taste, creativity, presentation, and how much people like them. At the end of the week-long celebration, a jury will judge, also by taking into account the opinion of all those who ate at the Pizzafest, the various pizzas and proclaim the best pizzaiolo in the world. It’s a great idea for a trip for foodies to visit Naples for the pizza festival.

No, it's from a Pampered Chef recipe I found online. It looked so delish.

Do you like Home Run Inn's pizza? I used to live near one of their restaurants in the 90's and would go there often. Good crust. 🍕
I grew up in Chicago and moved to Montana, but returned for a summer after I finished college, and my friends kept talking about Home Run Inn, so they took me there once. Now whenever I hear about Chicago deep dish pizza, I think about the Home Run Inn. All the years I lived in Suburban Chicago (Berwyn), I never had deep dish until I came home for that one summer in 1967. I've often wondered if the Home Run Inn invented deep dish, because I never heard of deep dish for all the pizza I went through in my high school years while living there.

I think deep dish started many, many years ago with Pizzeria Uno and Gino's East, which were in or near downtown. It really took off in the 60's and 70's and Giordano's and Lou Malnati's became, and still are, major players. Now, you can get it anywhere and everywhere.

I never heard of Home Run Inn until they started to expand and opened the restaurant near me! I've always been a Northsider...both city and suburbs...and they're not.

You can buy their frozen pizza at the grocery if you want to relive your carefree youth!
