National Spumoni Day - August 21st

Spumoni Ice Cream Terrine | Spumoni ice cream, Ice cream desserts ...

Spumoni Fun Facts. Spumone (from spuma or “foam”), plural spumoni, is a molded Italian ice cream made with layers of different colors and flavors, usually containing candied fruits and nuts.
  • Typically spumoni is made with three flavors, with a fruit/nut layer between them. The ice cream layers are often mixed with whipped cream. Cherry, pistachio, and either chocolate or vanilla are the typical flavors of the ice cream layers, and the fruit/nut layer often contains cherry bits. This causes the traditional red/pink, green, and brown color combination.
  • Spumoni differs from ice cream in that it should always be sliced, never scooped.
  • Spumoni was first made in Naples. It is now popular in places with large Italian immigrant populations, such as the U.S. and Argentina.
America's most nostalgic ice cream parlors

I have a very specific memory of Spumoni ice cream. As a kid in Toronto we went to a new, modern church on an early Sunday evening. On the way home, in this different section of the city, we stopped for the ice cream. It was the first time I ever had it. I can still visualize the church and the ice cream.
