AS a 19 year old kid, I got a short term job at the annual Canadian National Exhibition in late August. I was working for one of the kiddie ride operators. I made a deal with the site boss that I could stash 300 umbrellas under the back of the tent. I had bought them at a wholesalers in downtown Toronto. The CNE runs 3 weeks, until Labour Day weekend . My theory was that is has to rain at least one day in 19 days. I had paid a buck each for the cheap umbrellas so I had set my price at $5 each. Sure enough it rained on the first week end, hard. I sold just about all of the 300 pieces. I am now ahead of the game. The site boss came to me and asked " Can I get in on this deal " ? Sure, give me $300 and you can sell them along with me. We both made a serious amount of money on the umbrellas that year.
After the CNE was over, I bought some more umbrellas and some of those cheap plastic rain hats for women. When it rained I was standing outside Union Station selling the items to the people coming and going out of the station. $5 for a umbrella and a buck for the rain hat, which I was buying for 25 cents at the wholesalers . See a need, and fill it. JImB.
