Need to Lose 40 Pounds.

You're going to get lots of advice. Mine is just to not give up if something isn't working. Keep trying until you find what works for you.
You've got this! 🌼
I am a calories in, calories out person and use myfitness pal when needed to get on track. Some calories are less dense therefore you can eat more. Anyway, whatever works for you. Even the fitness gurus with all their various diets are getting back to a basic healthy eating pattern.
Swimming is a great idea!!!!!!!!!

My advice would be to not make it too difficult for yourself.

Diets tend to be temporary and often faddy. I think just making simple healthy eating changes works better and keeps the weight off. Until I did a nutrition course I did not think about portion sizes which are, much smaller than I'd realised.

Actually, thinking back to when we were growing up, we used to have Sunday tea and that was the only day we would have things like cakes, pastries etc. If you have a sweet tooth and miss those treats, perhaps have a weekly treat. Certainly don't be disheartened if you "fall off the wagon".

It's great that you exercise and you have set your goal. Good luck :)

Thank you for all the support
Today I walked 2.66 kilometres on our nice nature trails

The pool I inquired about in the city is closed for the summer. It’s a school pool so only open during the teaching days. That’s ok cause I discovered that the nearby golf course has a pool so I went there today and I was the only one. It was totally blissful.

I’m guessing it’s 12 metres and I did 100 lengths which is 1.2 kilometres. It’s not heated so it took me a bit to get in but once I got swimming it was wonderful. It’s took me an hour to swim that far and my arm held out. In fact I think it did my arm good. I’m going to try and swim every second day.

I’ll will find out how long the pool is so I know exactly how far I’m going. For food I had a big caesar salad. On Saturday I’ll try and take a picture of the pool. I didn’t take my phone in today since I didn’t know where my stuff would be. It’s $5 per swim.

When this place closes in October I’ll do the senior swimming. It’s 55 plus which I’m so happy since I’m not quite 65 year. It’s $65 for 10 passes. I’m tinkled pink to finally be swimming again. There’s 2 pools I can go in.

This is so great for you!

I do hope there is someone else there in case of emergency, like a Lifeguard. No one should be in the water alone.
There is no lifeguard but it clearly states to use at your own risk. I’m not worried about anything happening. Most of my swimming has been out in the lake somewhere completely alone. I’m a risk taker and always have been. Having a lifeguard at this pool would completely ruin it for me.

It’s been a week today that I started swimming to lose weight. I’ve swam three times in one week . I’ve swam 4 kilometres in total which isn’t bad and lost 3 pounds.
I plan on swimming 2 to 3 times a week.
I’m walking approximately 15 kilometres a week not including all the walking I do in the house or housework. I like to keep those separate. I’m happy with my progress . I plan on swimming my way to a healthy weight one pool length at a time.

It’s 30 degrees outside but I’m as cool as a cucumber after my long swim. It truly feels good.IMG_4794.jpeg

You're doing great Patty. Stay with it; you're making us proud of you!
What a nice pool that is.

I will say that to lose weight from exercise requires LOTS OF EXERCISE. Drinking water cuts out lots of calories. Let me just say that I always said if I COULD LOSE 40lbs I would be the happiest man on earth. Well I went from 222 to 182 last year. About Christmas time. But it was from having prostate surgery. I had no appetite and most things tasted bad. I was actually afraid I would starve to death.

But I have gained 10lbs back. I like my leaner body and now trying to keep the weight off. Its bizarre. Like beware what you wish for you might get it. I never imagined losing that weight would come at such a cost to my health. But swimming is an OUTSTANDING exercise. Not hard on joints and can be aerobic. I wish I could do it.... btw I was a PE teacher for 40 yrs and understand the value of exercise.

Swimming definitely can be aerobic exercise. It IS for me. I’m swimming at 1.2 kilometres an hour. It’s very easy on the joints and good for them. It’s helping my arm joint heal. I can’t do my regular yoga any more and needed something to replace the aerobic activity I did.
It’s also good for the heart, lungs and blood circulation. I’m not going to enjoy swimming with others but I’ll do it when the time comes, which will be in September. I’ll probably swim there once and in this pool once per week until October. I’m hoping senior swimming isn’t popular. I’m hoping I’ll get used to it.

You're very inspiring Patty! I just read this thread to my son who has gained a lot of weight from his medication. He's outside walking already!

That pool is like your own private discovery, what a fine gift.
Thank you. One thing that I try not to do is get stuck on what the scale says. Somedays the scale goes down but somedays the scale goes up. I have to just keep on swimming and walking. Eventually the scale will continue to drop. It’s easy to get disappointed when the scale doesn’t consistently go down. Today after writing that I lost 3 pounds, in one day I gained them all back. Note: it’s gotta be water weight.

I'm sure it's water weight. Bodily water content is so iffy, that's why when I'm dieting I only weigh myself once a month to make sure I see a down trend.

It’s gotta be water weight. The other day I ate corned beef with lots of sodium in it so drank lots of water.

I like your idea of weighing yourself once a month while dieting. Thats a great idea. I think I’ll do the same. I’ll weigh myself at the beginning of each month. Good plan.
Thanks for the suggestion.
