After years of telling people not to store potatoes in the fridge, the Food Standards Agency has changed its mind. The original advice was based on tests showing that chilling spuds produced extra sugars which turned into a potentially dangerous chemical, but new research has shown that it’s no riskier than keeping them in the cupboard. If you need to make room in the fridge, take out your tomatoes, which lose flavour when cold, and cucumbers, which go mushy. And keep apples, kiwis and apricots away from cabbage, carrots and celery – the fruits produce ethylene gas as they ripen, which spoils the veg.

Thanks for the FYI. I never heard about not storing potatoes in the fridge...I must live under a rock! I've always stored them in the refrigerator and so far that dangerous chemical hasn't bothered me! :) But then, I've eaten eggs and drank coffee my whole life, too, back when "they" (whoever that is) said it wasn't safe or good for you. I'm still waiting to hear that we don't eat enough bacon! :ROFLMAO:

Went a little off topic...sorry!

Hey neighbor... I'm under the same rock! 🤭 I never heard about the chemical thing... only about keeping them in a "dry" place and I always knew the fridge didn't qualify but I buy small bags and the crisper drawer has been fine for them for more than 40 years. @caroln

Can never have too much bacon.

I wish I had room for another fridge to be used like a cold cellar. No basements in this neck of the woods for cold storage. My in laws had a full basement. We had a cellar growing up.
Good to know about the potatoes though if we have a lot.

Altho' some houses have basements in the UK, most do not... so we tend to use garden sheds a lot...

I saw this article about the potatoes the other day in the media.. but I have no intention of ever keeping potatoes in the fridge.. there's little enough space in there as it is..
