Here we go again...

"Taking a low-dose aspirin every day to prevent a heart attack or stroke is no longer recommended for most older adults, according to guidelines released Sunday.

After doctors said for decades that a daily 75 to 100 milligrams of aspirin could prevent cardiovascular problems, the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association reversed that idea.

A large clinical trial found a daily low-dose aspirin had no effect on prolonging life in healthy, elderly people and actually suggested the pills could be linked to major hemorrhages."

I saw that.

I'll continue taking an aspirin every morning.

My doc has me on a full dose 325mg aspirin ....sometimes I wonder???

It seems like our Health Care Industry changes its mind every few years....perhaps they are trying to prepare us for some new drug to replace aspirin, at several times the cost.

I've never believed in daily aspirin. Thinning blood is a double-edged sword. It raises the risk of a bleeding stroke, & also uncontrolled bleeding from an otherwise-minor injury. It is frequently the cause of death in elderly persons. A doctor admitted that's what Bob Hope died of - a GI bleed....before it was changed to "pneumonia."
On a personal note, my dad took daily aspirin on the advice of his doctor. I took him to the ER four times for GI bleeding. On one visit, the doctor said, "You're lucky you got him here quickly; in a few more minutes he would have bled out & died."
I remember when aspirin was advertised for this purpose years ago....stores had trouble keeping it in stock. Same with "Cheerios" & "Quaker Oats." After the FDA allowed the makers to say it reduces the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol, it also flew off shelves everywhere. ANY soluble fiber--found in beans, fruit, vegetables--will do the same. Fear sells.

I had a GI bleed. Surgery saved me. I wouldn't touch an NSAID with a ten foot pole.

Some people have coagulation problems , some don't. I think many can benefit from low-dose therapy but some can't. How does anyone know?

I think you nailed it< they don"tmake any money from asprin.

Occasional use--for pain won't hurt. It's the daily use (to prevent something) that can cause problems. Similar to the Opioid crisis. They're for pain after surgery, etc. for a short time; not for long-term use the way many doctors are prescribing them.

I take one 325 mg generic aspirin every day with supper, have ever since I survived a heart attack almost 10 years ago. It helps with arthritis pain too as I don't want to go over the recommended limit of acetaminophen . But if I take more than one, I get bruising from the least little bump . I'm going to keep on doing it. My GI system is fine.
I roll my eyes at this see saw research. A few weeks ago saw an article that said eggs weren't bad after all, then this week saw one that said yes, they were bad after all.

I never use aspirin, even for headaches (which are rare), I always knew that aspirin may cause GI bleeding. I take supplements and eat enough food that can thin the blood and prevent blood clots, so I think I'm good. It is odd how they push something for years, only to come out and announce that they are now against that practice. Hard for the average person to trust what to do for their health, we just have to do what feels right for us personally.

That's true, SB. I don't even know how doctors can keep up. I took low-dose aspirin for a while but after I had a gout attack in my foot in 2016, I found that aspirin can increase uric acid in the bloodstream... which is the cause of gout. So I haven't taken the aspirin since then.

I take 81 mg and I’m not stopping.

I used to take it in the morning but read somewhere that most heart attacks happen at night so started taking at night.

Most heart attacks happen early a.m. when the blood is thickest from heart beating slowest for an extended period of time due to sleeping and also blood platelets are stickiest at same time.

Taking an 81mgs. Aspirin will not hurt anyone, unless they have ulcers or the doctor says no for any reason.

So what time should I take it? I get up around 4:00 a.m.

I saw that report as well. I asked my doc if I could stop taking it. She got right up in my face and said NO. I guess it depends on what your health problems are. I still take mine.
