New Job jitters

Just got hired yesterday for a retail position, very happy about this. Made it to the second interview, the lady was nice enough, during the interview she talked about the position and what was involved but in a Negative way, how there was so much to do, that she sometimes felt Sorry for them. Alot of multi tasking. Why would she talk to a new employee that way? You should want them to feel good about the new job? I got the feeling Maybe she didn't want someone my Age in her department, she asked "Are you Sure you want to work In this department"? She has put doubt in me that I might Not be able to do this? Afraid that I would end up getting let go, because I can't???

You will never know unless you try.

Your right, it's just I've heard things like this in the past. Before even being hired, I was told that I couldn't do the job. I'll try it, but still send other applications out. Thanks for your support.

You don't know her personality, she might just have been wanting to "prepare" you that it wasn't a "sit on your hands and wait" kind of retail job. Like, if you are a good worker, want to keep busy all the time, you'll probably like it but now that I've told you this, do you still want to work in this particular dept. Like Knight says...won't know unless you try. Personally I'd like a job like that much more than most of the sit and do nothing ones!

Your right, I do like keeping busy would make the time go faster. My last job I had to deal with 2 computer programs and operate a machine. But I learned my job over Time 32 year's. Im Sure there will be a limit on much time they'll give me, if I can learn fast enough? I've been in a retail line waiting where I've heard comments " about the cashier" maybe she's too old? I'll give it a try take notes, still send out resumes just in case? Thanks for your support.

Hey, keep us posted. Bet you will do fine, just don't concentrate on your age. Lots of us older folks working today. Hey, the Baby Boomers rule! Tell you something funny, we had an older woman working for us when we were in our 30's and we also had a 16 yr old working for us. He and the older gal used to banter back and forth and one day he said "you are just too old"...she laughed and fired back at him, "you little @#$%, just wait till some 8 yr old comes in here and calls you old!"

Lol, that's Funny, but so True, thanks so much for your support. I'll try Not to overthink it, hopefully the person training me will have patience, with so many things to learn, hope to catch on well? I'll take plenty of notes 😉

You always impress anyone by taking notes! I'm sure this isn't their first hiring "rodeo" and they will appreciate your trying. You are so very right. Don't overthink it...just smile and listen, and don't be afraid to speak up if you don't understand and/or need something repeated to you! That is very impressive to those training you. Who ever expects someone to get it all the first couple go rounds. The "try" is counted as righteousness...lol.

I appreciate your positive input, makes me feel better. I'm a Big Note taker, your so right about smiling and listening, shows them I care. I really want this to Work, I REALLY need the job. They said they liked me Alot, they had a good Vibe from me. They hired me as a regular employee not seasonal, which I thought they would, and glad for that means I can be around for a long time 🙂

For hiring someone, that's kind of an odd take in filling a position-"Are you Sure you want to work In this department"? It's kind of like saying to Christians, being thrown into the arena, "So. you want to work with lions?"

You got it made if that's the case. They "liked you a lot...and they had a good Vibe from me".
Fantastic. They were just being sure you knew that dept. was a busy one. Remember one time, when I worked in the advertising dept as a teenager, the shoe guy ask me if I could fill in for an hour or two...couldn't believe how busy the shoe dept. was! Each dept. is different and I'm like you, would sure rather work in a "busy" environment than one where you were checking your watch every 15 minutes. Sure makes the day go by fast and is way more interesting and stimulating. You aced them. They like you and you just smile and try - that's all it takes - can't ask for anything more, for a great start, gal! Just keep on keeping on and pretty soon you'll even know what you're doing...lol.

I know, I question that myself? But someone else made a good point letting me know what's involved with that department? I'm afraid to go back to her and ask for a different department? Thanks for writing

Actually this sounds a litte odd to me. I can't speak for others but for myself, my wife & when my kids were old enough when applying for a job we knew what the job was about. What we didn't know were the expectations, wage, and benefits. That was all covered in the interview process.

Are you saying you didn't know what the company did and you applied without knowing anything?

Maybe the person has an age bias, just show them by your actions how wrong they are. :)

Maybe?i

I do know what the company does, but on their application, it asked which department would I work in? I checked All of them so they could see that I was open to anything. So the food person passed me off to the person in customer service then she started telling me what I was getting myself being in her department. That it's so Much, that she even feels sorry for the people who work under her? So I felt she was trying to discourage me? I knew how much I would be making, there wouldn't be any benefits because I was part time. Thanks for writing

Thanks for sharing your experience, let me ask you something? What do you think about me asking her if it would be Best for me to work in the other department? That I want to do the Best job that I can? I really need the job, they seem flexible.

I would not ask her. CS is a tough job but I would give it a try and do my best. You will probably surprise yourself. Dealing with customers is a tough job but most people just want a fair outcome to their problem. I would wait and see how it goes before asking about a transfer to another department.

Thanks for writing, about 40 years ago I was a customer service supervisor, so Yes I know it tough, but Now they expect from what she was explaining what's involved is So More and also now we have technology, I do know how to get on a computer. But it seem like she was making me doubt myself? I'm going to sleep on whether or not to speak as

I've been up thinking about it, thank you and others for the support. I'm underestimating myself, I'm going to try it, I might surprise myself like you said. I'm getting in my head. My orientation is this Wednesday.

Personally, since you ask me, I'd just show up with a smile and take it from there. Don't start off by asking about a different department -( they don't even know you yet) -or judge a job by the first few days. Everything seems strange to you and you are finding your way to the restroom and coffee bar. If you are working in Customer Service, I'd remember what I used to tell our employees...don't interrupt them if they are "venting" or they will just start all over again; wait till they are through and then speak in a calm, pleasant voice to them.

Always remember customers can't possibly be mad "at you", they don't even know you, so don't take what they say personally, and you have no idea what kind of day they are having or what other challenges they may have that could be putting them in a foul mood. Just calm them and assure them "everything will be ok"...and it will be! Keep us posted kiddo.

Thank you for your support, I will take your advice and make the Best of it. Maybe it won't be as Bad as I have it in my head? A Big dosge of PATIENCE when dealing with the consumer putting myself in their shoes. Thanks
