Hello to all, My dh and I have been planning for retirement for several years and I am constantly trolling for information to help us make the transition. He was diagnosed with Parkinsons 2 yrs ago and its my job to keep him working as long has he can. He will turn 60 later this year. He is a USNavy submarine nuc - veteran and we moved to Tennessee for work 9 years ago. I haven't worked since we've been here as we hit just at the 2008 downturn. I was a flooring specialist and its also my job to see our finances are in order for the future.

Our 3 sons are grown and have finally managed to leave the nest for their own lives. Only one lives nearby. It is our dream to go HOME! We are making plans to return to New England for retirement. Despite moving around a lot for work, we have spent a lot of time in the New London, CT and Westerly, RI area. We would love to return there but both states tax EVERYTHING. So, we have fallen for Portland, Maine. We made a fact-finding trip last Oct and were VERY impressed. It is a great city - not too big but plenty going on. Medical care looks to be top notch and it has a lot of support for Parkinsons in the area. We met with a super Realtor on the last day and are staying in touch as we watch the market. She carefully listened to all we had to say and pointed us to the perfect neighborhood. We are excited to made the move when the time comes.

Looks like a fun and informative group here!

Hi myquest55, I,m brand new to the site also. I also live in tn some what reluctantly. I moved here to be close to my mother for her last few years.
That's a long story no one really wants to hear. Welcome looking forward to hearing more about you.

:welcome: Hi there and welcome to the board. I hope that it proves to be a useful source of support in planning that transition. And I hope that you also have some fun here.

Greetings from Massachusetts, where I just transitioned to retirement at the end of February. This is a great group of people and you'll learn a lot from them.

Hello, from Toronto! I'm excited for you, and hope your move goes well. Portland, Maine is a lovely city, as is the surrounding area.

Thank you so much for the warm welcome! We have been collecting information for the past few years and since the rules keep changing I'm sure this group will be helpful. I have spent some time at Top Retirements.com but the folks there don't seem to be as chatty so many questions go unanswered. Having moved around a lot over the years, I know how stressful a move can be. The internet has certainly eased that strain. Family can be important, out children are spread out but most of our relatives are sprinkled up and down the east coast.
We made a trip to Maine last fall - specifically to check it out for retirement. I reached out to several gals on the knitting website, Ravelry.com, as well as asking everyone we know if they knew people there. We were treated to lunch twice and given tours of the city with information just pouring in! It was a wonderful trip!! I have since reached out to another few and have found two other couples in SE Tennessee who are also headed to Maine so we feel we won't be alone. So many people seemed to be headed south - its great to meet some who feel called to the north too!!

Welcome aboard. I just joined recently myself. This is a great place to hang out.
