As I read it, the 55 mpg is average for passenger vehicles, whether internal combustion gasoline, diesel, electric, sail, etc.

That's awesome. Now I wish they would tackle the problem of appliances that break after a short time, that has to be a huge resources and carbon waster, it certainly has become a waster of my money and it is so hard to know which appliance will really last a while or not.

According to that article, the current standard is 38 MPG. I drive an economy car and it doesn't get 38 MPG, so WTF?

It's going to take a lot of arm waving and creative accounting to get to the 55 mpg "fleet average".

It's is based on entire fleet (passenger vehicles), which includes hybrids, electric and has major adjustments for the so-called flex-fuel vehicles and what is called a passenger vehicle versus truck, and the foot-print thing, not to mention the "estimated MPG".
