My mailbox is down at the road and with my VA meds showing up randomly, I can't help but worry. Ran across and just installed a remote mail alert device that is cheap and actually works! The 2 AAA battery operated sending unit is velcroed to the inside of the mailbox door and the receiver is plugged into the wall and stuck in viewing range. It will initially beep, then a little light flashes until the reset button is pushed. It's about $25 bucks from "Smarthome" online.

Sounds like a pretty slick little item. Mail theft is something I never even considered. Is there a problem with it in your area?

My only nod to paranoia is two motion activated cameras on my shed and drive, and even then, mostly just because I think they are neat, over any real security concern.

I think the greatest technology advance in my lifetime has been the Internet. There is virtually Nothing that I might want to do, for the first time, that I cannot find some information on the Net on how to do it. That, coupled with access to news from all around the world, and information on virtually every conceivable subject, has allowed us to gain quick access to knowledge that we might have spent hours or days getting in the past.

Got to admit that the internet is pretty handy. I live in a small village and it's quite a way to the nearest large stores - ever further if I want something specialised. I can buy most things with the click of a mouse button and get it delivered the next day.

Other than that, I recon that the cordless drill is one of the best tools ever invented.

My favorites: the internet and especially Google, wireless doorbell, battery-powered drill, LED Christmas lights, eReaders, eBooks, Chromebook, cordless phones, flat TV, Personal Video Recorders (PVR), and digital medical records that are available to medical specialists and hospitals on request. I'm also really grateful for modern automobiles with all the power accessories and cruise control. Then there are all the modern mobility aids such as rollators, power chairs and and electric scooters. In nice weather, we use our scooter as recreation vehicles to explore the neighbourhoods.

We have some mail theft here. A couple years ago, someone stole a new (reissued because old one was expiring) was stolen from my mailbox. Bad guys ran up a bunch of bills and I didn't even know the card was gone until the bank called up to ask me about a bunch of very out of character for me charges. I didn't have to pay for the charges, and I was very glad the bank had noticed and called me. This happened to me once about 10 years ago, too. Sleazeballs just come up and take the mail right out of the box on front of my house. This is one reason I do as much online as I can, and ask that no statements or other items with personal information be snail-mailed to me.
