New Vehicle

The day before Christmas, I took delivery of my new 2023 Chevrolet Suburban High Country with 4-wheel drive. The starting price was $88,000, but after wheeling and dealing, I got it down to $82,200. I also got free oil changes for 3 years and 3 free state inspections. I left feeling I got a decent deal. I had no trade-ins, but I am selling one of my other two vehicles. I have a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox LT that I’m going to sell.

Less than 2 weeks after having the car, it wouldn’t pull away from a red light or stop sign, unless I really applied a lot of pressure to the accelerator, so I took it straight back to the dealer. The service manager said it’s probably something in the computer and they will need to keep it a few days and they gave me a free loaner. After not hearing from them for a week, I called the service manager and asked her what was going on with my truck. She told me that they had 2 mechanics check it out and they couldn’t figure it out, so a guy from GM is due to stop by this week and take a look at it. I was glad that it acted up when the mechanics took it out for a test drive. A lot of times, the dealer will tell you that it ran fine for us.

So far, the dealer has had it longer than me. The service manager told me that they plugged my car’s computer module and sent the truck’s info to the GM computer by using the internet, but it didn’t show any issues. This is why they are sending out a GM tech to check it out. Just out of curiosity, I asked her if they also check out other things using my car’s internet module like where I am, what kind of gas I use, have I been in an accident and so on. She said GM tracks my vehicle all the time to establish my habits and the truck’s condition. I said, “Huh?”

Anyway, when I get my truck back is anyone’s guess. Right now, I feel like I spent a lot of money and got nothing in return.

My last, and I mean last GM vehicle was a 2017 Silverado. It had some kind of electrical/computer problem. The power steering and power breaks would suddenly fail, and a lot of other electrical issues like all the dash light blinking and going haywire. The power steering and breaks failures whilst driving was a safety hazard, it happened once when I was trying to make a left turn in a busy intersection. I was luck to have the strength to get through it, my wife could not have.

It took a number of trips to the dealer before it finally happened when one of their mechanics was driving. They replaced a bunch of wiring and maybe the computer. Happened again, and they replaced even more of the electronics. Third time it happened I tried to use the lemon law to get rid of it, but they would not work with me. Turns out each time it failed they listed a different cause, so on paper it did not look like an occurrence of the same problem. The mechanics even tried arguing that to me.

Got rid of it and bought a new Honda Ridgeline. That truck and my experience with GM and the dealer ended a long run of GM products... never again!!

@Been There hope yours works out better.

I know it's easier said than done & you may not be able to do it, but can you make them take it back? That is so wrong on so many levels what you are going through.

I can’t imagine spending that much on a depreciating asset. Not criticizing because obviously you can afford it. Hopefully they will figure out the problem. The most I ever spent on a car was 20k. My son bought a Tesla for 60k and I also think that’s insane 😆.

I strongly suggested that and much to my surprise, I was told by the owner of the dealership where I bought the car that GM was considering a buy-back with a zero pro rating. The vehicle only had 270 miles on it. I should know something by the end of the week.

I also bought the vehicle with an electronic rear lift gate, but they didn’t have the chip to make it work using the key fob or the dash switch. They told me they would definitely have the chips in stock before spring.

Um....they track your vehicle and you all the time?? I wouldn't like that. We don't have an Alexa. And at home we use a non tracking browser and search engine. Do all new cars have that?

One thing about Suburbans is that they do hold their value, which means they depreciate at a slower rate than a lot of other similar vehicles.

I’m not sure if all vehicles have the tracking device, but even insurance companies are using them. It can be a good thing for someone who may get carjacked, except I don’t worry about that. I keep a .357 between the seats. Whoever tries to carjack me may need to have a tracking device so the cops kind locate their body parts.

Somebody always has the brand new car from hell. Hopefully, yours isn't one of them. One problem I have with GM is the chip issue, which has gone on for a few years now. If your corporation's existence depends on a single part,, it's insane to have ONE and ONLY ONE source. And if that source is threatened, you take your billions and build your own plant. Didn't Henry Ford teach you guys anything?

Wow! That's an outrageous invasion of privacy, don't you think? Can it be turned off?

I am sure the thieves have figured how to turn these off on vehicles that have them.

Personally, I would get my money back & go on. I had a Chevy Celebrity back in the early 80s that was in the shop more than my driveway. Lemon law was passed a few months after I got it, so it didn't help. I haven't bought a Chevy since.

I would want my money back but l believe the Suburban is pretty much one of a kind if you have the need for that size and type of vehicle. I know someone will correct me if I’m wrong.

That said I haven‘t bought GM for decades and never intend to again.

Not sure. I will have to ask.

Actually, I have had good luck with GM vehicles. My Equinox (2015) has never seen the inside of a garage, except for oil changes, inspections and a front wheel tire sensor. I almost bought the Tahoe, but I took my dog along and she liked the Suburban better. You have to keep the ladies happy, right? Besides, when we go on road trips, her and I can sleep in the back.

In order to prove your new GM 2023 is a lemon, you'll need to have: the warranty's specified dollar costs in repairs and/or multiple times the vehicle was brought in for repairs.

Does your warranty cover the dealer providing you with a rental car?

Your experience happens often to those who purchase a GM product - or any American-made vehicle. My brother & several friends also learned that - the hard way. That's why there hasn't been an American vehicle in my family for years.
My suggestion: Get rid of it & buy a Japanese vehicle. You'll be money ahead.

I agree that in general the Japanese have better quality control but my last 2 vehicles were Ford Trucks. My E350 diesel van I bought in 2000 & for 21 years was not a problem. I replaced that a couple years ago with a F150 & think it's the best vehicle I've ever had & expect it to last longer than me. Of course I never, ever, let them get close to a dealer!

"GM tracks my vehicle all the time to establish my habits and the truck’s condition."

Okaaayyy.... o_O

The sales contract you signed probably says they'll take the car back without penalty within a certain time, usually 30 or 60 days.

New vehicles have weird gas saving measures. They usually have a button so you can turn off the option but you have to do it each time.
Yours may have an eco feature that doesn't let you accelerate too fast from a stop sign. Maybe it got out of wack and/or maybe you could have turned it off.
My husbands truck cuts off at stop lights unless he's remembered to turn off that feature when he starts the car.

Boy, you guy's stories make me even happier with my '93 Jimmy

Paid $2500 for it eight years ago

When I put new tires on it last summer, the manager told me 'Anytime you wanna let go that rig, just let me know'

Just put in a new starter $200 (parts)
New Ignition switch $300 (installed)

I'm hangin' onto it 'til it lets go of me

Looks like my 97, but sadly, she was worked pretty hard hauling hay and pulling trailers for 20 years.

Advis the OP to Check your state "lemon law" may be returnable and full refund withing 30..90 days if defective.
Check service record for that brand/model.
Write letter to CEO of dealer, and car firm.
Check forums for your brand/model, look for similar problems.

New cars/truck have so much IT, SW, computer junk they are impossible to fix even for dealers.

I love my still perfect Volvo 2007, no problems.

Jon
