New York to fine travelers from Florida $2,000 if they don’t provide contact information

We’re serious about enforcing quarantine,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a tweet.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says people traveling to his state from Florida will be fined $2,000 if they don’t provide contact information to authorities when they arrive.

Given the lackadaisical attitude being exhibited by so many, I suspect that passing out "fines" may be the only way to get some people's attention. One of our cities just passed a ruling this past week that fines those in public without a mask $15, and businesses that do not follow the proper protocols will see a fine of $100. I don't see any way to enforce such policies on a wide scale, but perhaps just the "threat" will encourage more people to be cautious.

I remember Cuomo was up in arms when Florida wanted to trace New York visitors when NYC was in the middle of the epidemic. I also remember him threatening to sue Rhode Island for wanting to quarantine NYC visitors at that same time. While I don't blame him for wanting to keep out visitors from states where covid is now more active, I do blame him for being pushy and arrogant with other states that wanted to be safe from New York visitors when they were in the height of the pandemic.

The travel restrictions include self quarantining New Yorkers that are returning home from other states.

If you have traveled from within one of the designated states with significant community spread, you must quarantine when you enter New York for 14 days from the last travel within such designated state, provided on the date you enter into New York State that such state met the criteria for requiring such quarantine.

The requirements of the travel advisory do not apply to any individual passing through designated states for a limited duration (i.e., less than 24 hours) through the course of travel.

Examples of such brief passage include but are not limited to: stopping at rest stops for vehicles, buses, and/or trains; or lay-overs for air travel, bus travel, or train travel.

The travel advisory requires all New Yorkers, as well as those visiting from out of state, to take personal responsibility for complying with the advisory in the best interest of public health and safety.

I doubt that a fine will ever be collected but it does help to keep a record of people that may be of benefit if they become ill or are found to be infected.

If this and other measures help to keep New York virus cases from flaring up again I'm all for it.

Like him or hate him IMO Governor Cuomo has done an exceptional job in managing the response to the virus and keeping New Yorkers informed.
