New Zealand to Tax Cattle Flatulence!

There are millions of tons of Methane frozen in the Artic permafrost and ocean sediments. As the climate continues to warm, this methane will be released in larger and larger quantities. Animal "flatulence" is just a small part of the increasing pollutants that will be prevalent in our atmosphere in coming decades/centuries.

The New Zealand Government is trying to work out how to do this,
they say that livestock are the largest contributors to the greenhouse
gas effect, until they solve the problem, they cannot become carbon
neutral!

You couldn't make it up.

Mike.
So what can farmers do to avoid this tax, give their cows antacids?:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Unfortunately, this came to mind.. not meaning to gross anyone out.. but thought of old Alka-Seltzer commercial, it'd give new meaning to "plop, plop, fizz, fizz"...

It doesn't bare thinking about!!
All over the world, the most beautiful landscapes will soon be ruined with gigantic gasometers on every cattle farm, and cow's ar**holes plumbed into them with flexible hoses to collect the precious fart gas.
No, I won't have I tell you. 😊

If this tax is a success, then there will be a shortage
of meat, because the Farmers will just give up rearing
animals and stick to growing vegetables, I think.

The price of beef already went up here in the US after cattle farmers were hit with new regulations regarding more humane pen sizes, herding methods, and killing. Then prices went up again after Russia invaded Ukraine due to grain and feed shortages. And they'll go up even further if farmers are hit with a fart tax.

I won't be surprised if at least some cattle farmers switch to raising pigs instead, since we export huge amounts of pork to China and a few other Asian countries. Plus, pig feed is cheaper than cattle feed, they take up less space, and they don't require regular (expensive) hoof care like cattle does. And pigs produce way more offspring, too.

Leakage from Oil and Gas operations is also a big one, and having done a lot of work for the Oil and Gas industry I think it is probably often underestimated.

Natural seepage is also an important source.

And like the artic releases @Don M. mentioned the sea floor contains absolutely huge amounts of methane tied up in hydrates. These are only held in place by cold temperatures and high pressures. Just small warming of the deep oceans could release as much or more than all these other sources put together.

So if you are prone to worrying about methane, cow farts are the least of the problem...

Sounds like a lot of new jobs opening up. Inspectors running around tagging farting cows.

I totally agree, it's stupid, its another farmer bashing which is common here. A pity the govt. wouldn't concentrate on the obvious for starters. Any savings we make will be a drop in the ocean on the overall scheme of things.
