New Zealand wins a seat on the Security Council

We Commonwealth types are members of an exclusive club that has very strict membership standards.
You're just jealous because you don't qualify but it will avail you nought to mock.

Pay for? Don't be ridiculous! If my misguided relatives had stayed in the mother country rather than leaving in a snit I would be one now...

Apologies Dame Warrigal for our insame rambling. I confess I don't know enough about it, to know if NZ being on the Security Council is a good thing or not. Why were they not on it before now?

There are only five permanent members on the Security Council - China, France, Russia, UK and US. These 'big five' have the power to veto any resolutions that they don't like. Other countries are elected to temporary membership for a period of two years, during which time they exercise diplomacy and attempt to influence outcomes. Australia has a seat at the moment and New Zealand will have one soon.

It is expensive to campaign for votes but probably well worth it to be able to make even a slight difference. I reckon NZ will do well in the SC.

The Security Council should not be confused with the General Assembly where very government is recognised.

As for insane rambling, Ralphy and I have found that this is the only way we can communicate. Insanity is our lingua franca.

Yes, it is just a sop for the wee countries. As for insane ramblings, nonsense, we speak truth which is hard for some to discern...
