News coverage of Trump and other candidates

Never been a fan of Mr. Trump and his candidacy to this point confirms my decision to look in other directions for the next leader of this country. Years ago I started reading the NY Times as I commuted into the city, mainly for the columns on the op-ed pages and it helped pass an otherwise boring train ride into Boston. Over the years, I've rather come to appreciate Charles Blow as a columnist. I find his writing style interesting and often agree with his view points. Anyway, for anyone interested, I present today's column on how the mainstream media is at least partially responsible for what we see with Trump day after day. See if you agree with his viewpoint here. I totally understand why they cover him, just as they do anything that will sell the news, but that doesn't make it any less appealing. Anyway, a good column in my view. Curious to hear opinions from others. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/27/o...lick&contentCollection=Opinion&pgtype=article

Nice column Bob. I agree the press have blown this otherwise low brow, arrogant, egotistical spoiled brat into a superman. He was born on third base and thinks he hit a triple and the media has helped in that image. Had he not had Daddies seed money, he would not be where he is now. People need to WAKE UP and we shouldn't need media to tell us when.

If most had every statement they made analyzed like the media does most wouldn't look pretty or pc. That being said being a professional public figure you would think Trump and others would be much more careful about what they say. Especially since some know a presidential run is a realistic possibility for them. But it is that same personality that has lead to his business success because many who excel or succeed more than others tend to be very aggressive about getting what they want. That could include not taking the time to think and act pc, it's eyes on the prize at all times-in Trump's case "the deal", as long as he completes "the deal" pc doesn't mean squat because it's all about business.

But it all goes back to what Trump says, he's not pc and the American public is smart enough to realize when they are being given a canned and calculated answer along with being lectured or pandered to. Most know in big companies especially there are people at work that they will never socialize or work with. Nor do they want to. But they also know there are times they have to work with someone they can't stand and the job still gets done.

Good article Bob, the media is definitely interested in viewers, so their excessive "reporting" on Trump is for ratings, that's their prize whether they truly care for him or not. I was laughing with my husband today, because some people in the past have called Obama the 'anti-christ'. I said to hubby, maybe this is the real anti-christ, he surely has everybody mesmerized with his presence, everyone absolutely 'loves' him, if you don't believe it, just ask him. :D I wasn't familiar with Charles Blow, but I may pop in on that site now and then and read what he has to say.

Thanks Bob. It is a good article. It's very hard to understand why the "shallow farce that is [Trump's] candidacy" wasn't so painfully obvious to everyone - readers and reporters - at the outset, that they did stop covering him. As a Canadian, though, I can tell you that this strange tolerance isn't unique to the U.S. Some of you may recall that Toronto's Mayor Rob Ford made international news a while back - a rare thing in Canadian municipal politics - simply because of his disgraceful behaviour. To our horror, it seemed for a while that we couldn't get rid of him. No one seemed able to do anything about this man. It was like everyone was disarmed by the shock of what was coming out of Rob Ford's mouth and by the things he was doing (drugs, drunkeness.) Apparently they couldn't fire the mayor - couldn't arrest him - it was extremely disturbing. Well, he got sick, had to drop out of the running for the next election, and now we have a decent mayor. But I guess my point is, the thing that Trump and Ford have in common is that they're obviously saying things that some people find acceptable - and that's what is really deeply disturbing.

Many influential Republicans are now saying that he could be their nominee after originally dismissing him...

Voices from all levels of society including thos with advanced degrees are beginning to swing his way...

Anyone who runs a a Republican automatically has 2 opponents, the Democrats and the media.

Going by Fox news and each and every talk radio station where I live being run by conservatives, from all I see and hear, the media is not an opponent. I think Biden said something to the effect about opponents not necessarily being enemies, so it's not a bad thing.

Wait.... I thought people with "advanced degrees" were looked down on and called elitists.... OH... that's only for Black Presidents graduating from Harvard.

You are so bitter all the time. You just have to toss in our President. I don't think there is much of a problem with his being black (partially) or his degree at all. It is more of his ways of running the federal government with no regard to the national debt that is getting most people nervous. Any change in the Presidents chair, Dem or Rep, will likely bring us some release from this blind run on our economy.

Exactly what you have done. There was no reason for his being part of the discussion.
