Night club roof collapses in the Domincan Republic. At least 18 dead and 90 injured

This is the first I'm seeing anything about this. Rubby Perez had such a nice face. I looked him up on YouTube to check out his music. What a terrible tragedy....people just out to have a nice time, listening to music and probably dancing. May they R.I.P. and may their grieving families and friends be comforted.

And most of them probably very young just starting out, falling in love, starting careers.

That's a lot of people in one building. I'm suspicious about the fire laws, the building inspectors, maybe somebody paid off to look the other way?

I know people who tried to have a home built there years ago when land cheaper but they had so many problems they only used contractors for stuff they absolutely couldn't do themselves. One contractor complained they didn't have the right equipment but can be bought by anyone in the states at a hardware store so they went to a local Home Depot and loaded a up shipment to there. Also apparently stuff runs at a snails pace in certain areas which a project can sit exposed to the elements for months waiting to be finished.

Also know people who been vacationing there recently. I keep on thinking of that missing spring breaker. They might have some modern amenities but behind the scenes away from the beaches it's probably not a first world country and standards.

In some respects for maybe that's the best way to go with little or no warning.
Yes and the ones who went instantly didn't have to suffer for two days and nights like these latest ones.

The death toll today is 184 with the doctors implying that some of the victims still might not make it.

I can't imagine what it's like in those hospitals. No city is prepared with enough doctors, operating rooms or blood supply for something like this.

It doesn't matter at this point but wondering if the roof collapse was total and catastrophic or the death toll so high because of the number of people in there at the time.

From the devastation it seems like the roof caved in from all sides like a slab of concrete. Also large pieces of sheet metal which could be worse because at least the concrete will break up a little(in this case apparently the cause as well) and make rescue a bit easier rather than having to cut or move solid pieces of sheet metal probably placed their with a cane.

RIP

The death toll is now a staggering 221 and over 200 hundred injured. This makes me wonder what the capacity was for that club. I feel so sorry for the families who have been on the scene since it happened, waiting to hear about their loved ones.
I think you are right. They were probably over their limit if there was one. I saw what looked several attached structures/rooms without a roof as well. Maybe that's how they got around it.

I'm still taken back the growing numbers. Look at an overhead picture and ask does look like it can hold 400 people?

I keep away from nightclubs and that is why I am pushing 79 years old.

These accidents happen almost every year. Usually the building if full of teenagers and somehow a fire starts and usually there is only 1 exit and everybody heads for the door at the same time.

I saw a news report that said the capacity was 1,000. I thought that place must've been massive! The rules about such things in the DR might be different from ours.

''
Puerto Rican firefighter Joel Figueroa, whose team is currently assisting Dominican authorities with rescue and recovery operations, speculated that the building may have been unable to carry the weight on its roof.

ā€œWe saw concrete slabs in the (nightclub) without rebar, which effects the capability of the building,ā€ said Figueroa, referring to steel bars usually added to concrete to increase its strength under tension.

ā€œIt’s amazing how long that roof supported that kind of load. We’re talking about generators, air conditioners. We saw different layers of concrete just on the roof that add more weight. And without rebar, that also affects the building.ā€

The nightclub was built more than 50 years ago, according to local media reports, and had a capacity to hold up to 500 people.''
