I remember decades ago one was lucky to to go into a shoe depart or store and see more than a 1/2 models tops. My first actual running shoe was the Adidas Country with actual leather(on a running shoe). Maybe this is what the Olympics should do. Put out an approved list including manufacturer unless a competitor needs a medical shoe. Take Olympic funds to purchase the shoes for the competitors from poor countries.
That being said they've been complaining about swimsuits, skie equipment/clothing etc for decades now. In the end it will work itself out. Although not a huge Olympic fan some of the science and tech for these sports is unique and gives one a better understanding of the details like correct form, training or equipment.
