A white New Jersey man sobbed in court on Friday after he was sentenced to eight years in prison for racially abusing his black neighbors.

Edward Mathews, 47, went viral in July 2021 when he was seen hurling racial abuse at a black neighbor and spitting on him.

It later emerged that Mathews had for years terrorized black people living in the Essex Palace condominium in Mount Laurel, 17 miles east of Philadelphia.

Victims told how Mathews had fired BB pellets at their cars, called them 'monkeys', put feces on their properties, and sent them threatening emails and letters.

On Friday, a shackled and handcuffed Mathews, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, apologized for 'my insensitive and disrespectful words in the past,' the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Edward Mathews, now 47, was seen in July 2021 squaring up to a black neighbor - spitting on him, calling him the n-word and a 'monkey', and saying he was 'from Africa', during a confrontation outside his Mount Laurel, New Jersey home

Incidentally I'm stunned that this racist is just 47 years old...that's the same age as my child...he looks 20 years older..

The laws in these situations are strange. You can call a person names, but not include anything threatening. For example; I could yell at my black neighbor the “N” word. That is not a crime. However, if I yell “Hey “N” I am going to kick your butt,” that is a misdemeanor. You can’t threaten anyone, no matter the color of their skin.

This man should count his blessings. The judge could have sentenced him to a lot more time if he had charged each count. In my 37 years as a state cop, I only had 2 complaints of racial harassment. In both situations, we write citations and turn the case over to the DA to use their discretion as to what charges will be tried. DA’s have a lot of discretion in these types of cases.

It could be a misdemeanor, a felony or even a criminal misdemeanor, which is seldom used, but it’s there if the DA chooses to use it.

One thing is for certain, he won’t have many friends in prison.

Is spitting on someone considered an assault?
It depends on the arresting Officer or Trooper. Because of the virus going around, some are being charged with simple assault. If it’s proven that the spitter tested positive for COVID, the spitter could be charged with aggravated assault, meaning that you knew you had COVID and intended to pass it on to the person you spit on. This is reckless with the intent to cause bodily harm.

Here in Pennsylvania, there is a bill before congress now that would inflict more damages to the spitter if he spit on a cop. The ACLU isn’t liking that.

In Ohio that could be considered Ethnic Intimidation or Disorderly conduct!

HD...you are something else! 🤓 You broke the news about this POS before I had a chance to read it in my local news feed. I'm sure he thought he would be able to get away with it...he did for quite sometime, after all. I hope when he gets to prison, the Black inmates find out exactly why he's there. Yes @Balzac that going to definitely seem like a very long eight years.

Idiots, imbeciles, and morons! Just accept the fact that this country has never been, and never will be a country of just one type of person. Accept the fact that your fellow Americans come in all colors, religions, ethnic heritage, & sexual preference. Then you can get rid of all that hate in your heart, and get on with your lives. You will enjoy life a lot more without all of that hate festering in your hearts.

My own reply had me thinking. I wonder if inmates make it their business to find out what the newly incarcerated are in for? Granted, some probably brag about their crimes. Also HD, when I first saw his picture, I thought the same as you....he does not look like he's 47. Well, evil and hatefulness can age ya, I guess.

If Edward Mathews is crying now, wait till he meets his new 'bros'-his cellmates. They are just going to welcome him with open arms. I don't think they'll even wait till he drops the soap.
Interesting, and revealing, that you, and several others on here, approve of this sort of violence. Your anticipatory delight is obvious. And of course, I also see blatant racism since you assume the attackers will be "bros".

I'm not defending Mathews, but even he doesn't deserve what you clearly are hoping for.

I'm not "hoping". But I think it's a safe bet someone in prison will disagree with Matthews outlook on life. And considering Mathews' racist antics whom might that be? But I was flippant about it.
