The insects have been gone for over a year. No spiders, no bugs, no flies, no mosquitos, no gnats, no moths or millers,; also no butterflies.
Don't miss them much but I miss the birds. They have only been gone a few weeks, probably due to a looming fire. I hear no chirping,singing,tweeting; no hummingbirds. It's eerie!
My yard used to be filled with white tail deer and they are no more.
I don't miss the insects, of course but could this be from experiments from the White Sands Missile range, nearby? Astrophysicists and scientists go in and out of there all the time. I'm conjuring up many aspects.
The birds, Would that be all from the fire, or might there be something else in the air?
My large dog is fine and I feel great, so I ruled out radioactivity. But, being alone, I have no one of any knowledge of things like this to ask.

I know ther are some intelligent people on this forum, even if they don't post much. Could you please speculate?
 

All I know is that in KS when the birds are suddenly gone that means a tornado is coming. If your birds are seriously gone there may be something really bad going on there. Be careful ok? Maybe see if you can find someone to help you look into it?

Plus the bug thing bothers me too. I always thought if things in nature were amiss that meant something bad was close by.
 
I gather this has been going on all this spring.

It was a very cold winter in Texas. That may be a small part of the reason. A theory I’ve heard is that the spraying of roads for winter ice, killed insects & other species alongside the road. Again, that would only be a small part of the problem.

If you drive a mile or 5, can you tell if things looks the same.

Some people love to spray. You’d almost think it was your place that was sprayed and you know it wasn’t.

On Monday, you could call your Department of Agriculture or Conservation. They’ll forward you to the correct department.

We can’t afford to lose our natural habitats and creatures. This is sad.
 

There is the food chain, and if the lowest are poisoned, the poison travels on up. Any spraying going on?
 
There are six deer that hang around in my woods. Saw a lot of robins last month, not so many now which likely means they are busy raising babies. Lots of wild bunnies, bugs and butterflies. In short, here in my little bit of the Pacific NorthWET, things are pretty normal.
 
I'm not a naturalist, by any means, but about the deer, I was told they tend to overpopulate an area. They out grow their food sources., When winter comes around, they don't have the necessary bulk to get through it, and, well, only a few strong survive. It's a cycle that's repeated over time. Don't know, but this could be what's happening in your area. Last year, there were at least a dozen deer in a herd, usually there's only 3-4. Now, there's only one.
 
Birds eat bugs don't they? No bugs...no food source. If the bugs left to survive that can't be a good sign.
 
Gaer. If you've been hit with fires around you or heavy smoke as a result of distant fires, it will take a while for wildlife to balance itself out again, so don't despair.

What is your climate like year-round? Do you enjoy four seasons?

Are there any other outside environmental influences that could be resulting in the lack of insect biodiversity that you have typically experienced in the past?

I have only been in a 60 mile radius of my property, and it's the same. No birds, no insects, no deer.
Insects gone, is over a year! I didn'trepair the hole in my screendoor last Summer because there were no insects.
The huge anthill by my back fence is empty.
Dept of Agriculture is a good idea! Thanks!

No, in 2012 the wildfire came within 1/2 mile of my home and I didn't have this experience. No rodents or reptiles either. (which is fine)
The fire has grown a little but is almost 1/3 contained, from what I last heard. The towns which are only 25 miles away have no insects or birds either.
Really eerie!

What about drought-like conditions in your area?

Extended periods where water is scarce or non-existent can bring on bio-diverse changes.
 
We don't have any such problems here. Bug and bird season is in full swing. Starting this time of year, I have to remember to spray myself with Deet before going into the forest...to avoid Tic bites.

I personally would have great concerns for my health and well-being living in close proximity to such a site.

oh i didn't know that. we have a missile range nearby here but it's only used for practice every so often by the military now. occasionally i will hear the fake missiles explode or whatever they're doing over there.

hope you get it figured out. and hope you'll be safe.

Yes, I know. My dog keeps looking at me tosee if I'm scared. He is staying close to me. (no fleas this year)
This area does not have earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, stuff like that. but I'm a little concerned.
This is most odd!
 
I would be too.

I have noticed here in KS there has been a slight change in our bug population. I've been watching it. Wondering.
 
Check with your county Cooperative Extension agent. New Mexico State University should have a site listing contact info. Local game warden may know something as well.

I looked up the website and the concenses is insects respond to any deviation from normal environmental conditions, to humidity, and to excessive light stimulous.
Environmental conditions have been normal, air quality normal, ( except for the fire, but that's 6-7 miles away and has only been 1 1/2 weeks. The insects have been gone for over a year!
You guys have given me some great contacts. I'll see what I can find out! Thanks!

That should read the other way;

No insects.......(therefore) no birds
