No vaccine, No kidney!

Like other cases, these transplant patients want to dictate hospital policy. The rules are in place for every candidate. Patient is immunocompromised patient with several comorbidities.

"Burke County resident Chad Carswell said that he’s on dialysis three times a week. He is a double amputee who has undergone several major heart surgeries.

“Without [a kidney transplant], there’s no telling how much longer I’ll be here, I have to have a kidney to prolong my life,” Carswell told the news station.

Atrium Health said the policy is in place to protect transplant patients who are at high risk for severe illness from COVID-19 since they are immunocompromised.

“Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist’s policy follows the current standard of care in the United States, which is to vaccinate all patients on waiting lists or being evaluated for transplant,” the hospital said.

“We understand that some patients may not wish to be vaccinated,” the statement continued. “In this case, patients can opt to be evaluated at another transplant center.”

“I was born free. I will die free. I’m not changing my mind,” Carswell told the outlet.

Good. He's already had covid-19 twice — once requiring hospitalization — and still refuses to get vaccinated. The public paid for his hospitalization and probably will pay for his kidney transplant, although I don't know his circumstances. He might be from a wealthy family, but I doubt it. It's more likely that he's on Medicaid and disability.

The only thing I can figure is that he feels like a complete nobody. Protesting the vaccine makes him feel like a somebody and he's getting his "15 minutes of fame." If he dies, he'll have gone down thinking he stood for something and is somebody who wouldn't let the world push him around any more. He'll be remembered, which is important to some people. That was James Holmes' rationale for shooting up the Aurora, CO movie theater. He just wanted to be remembered.

Vaccination is a reasonable criteria for transplants. But dying due to not meeting transplant requirements is the same old song, gazillient verse ...so many people fail criteria for transplants because they're over acceptable weight limits for transplant guidelines and won't lose it, won't quit smoking, don't control their diabetes etc, never get accepted for transplants and die.

IMO the following excerpts from the OP tell the real story.

The patient is an immunocompromised patient with several comorbidities. that he’s on dialysis three times a week. He is a double amputee who has undergone several major heart surgeries.

It doesn't sound like this person would be a good candidate for a kidney transplant with or without the vaccine.

Save the outrage for the young and relatively healthy people on the transplant list.

He doesn't sound at all like a good candidate. With nine years experience working in dialysis, the people I saw on dialysis with that type history 99.9% of the time got there due to non-compliance with their diabetes regimen.

A "Double amputee with kidney failure & a bad heart." He has a better will to live than I would in his situation.
I wouldn't do anything to prolong my life if I had such issues & had to spend most of my time hospitalized or recovering.
Four years ago, I practically went stir crazy from only 3 days in ICU & 5 more days hospitalized after a dentist did an incompetent root canal & left me with Sepsis.

That was the case with a dear friend of mine.

He was removed from the transplant list because he continued to smoke and drink while on dialysis.

He accepted it as a direct consequence of the life he chose to live.

I saw it more than once. Very sad. I also saw people get their act together long enough to get transplants then lapse back into poor heath choices including non-compliance with anti-rejection meds and lose the transplanted organs.

The way I see it... as long as I'm stuck here on earth, I might just as well make the most of it and take care of myself (within reason). I get no pleasure whatsoever from working out, but if I don't exercise, my body gets all achy and I feel like an old man, so I work out — granted not as much as I should, but just enough to keep me feeling half-way decent.

The lives of some people revolve around their political party. It defines who they are and who they're friends with. Their political party shuns the vaccine for the followers while most of the leaders are fully vaccinated. The followers want to please their leaders and are willing to get sick and even die to follow what amounts to religious cult dogma. Their politics is their religion. To most of us, it seems pathetic, but to them, it provides meaning in their lives, just like belief in the Bible.

I just clicked on the article and looked at his pic. He's not going to make the list because of his weight, no matter the rest of his poor medical history. There's no point in his getting bent out of shape over a vaccine.

I have a good friend waiting for a kidney, he has gone out of his way to do everything to optimize his chances of getting one. Very carefully watched his diet, exercise, and health, doing every thing asked or recommended, including getting vaccinated. He still knows the odds are he will die waiting anyway.

Here is a link to an article with some statistics, about 100,000 people in the US need kidneys and are on the waiting list, only about 17% will get kidneys, due to a shortage. 13 people a day die waiting. https://www.kidney.org/news/newsroom/factsheets/Organ-Donation-and-Transplantation-Stats

Guess I have little sympathy for some who doesn't follow the rules on this...

Doing the right thing by the next recipient, who will get the kidney they require a bit quicker.
