Not sure what to feel

Just got a call from former coworker... its hitting me hard...
I am being requested to attend a meeting and be presented a flag from the state for my years of service to our community in EMS..
A great honor and I'm proud...
But they are also presenting one to a dear friend, fellow Medics wife who died from Covid...
I almost feel I should deny the opportunity and let it be all about him....

My suggestion would be to go and accept the flag. I would guess you would be asked to speak. Take that opportunity to praise and draw attention to the the other recipient.

I think you need to accept the flag; be present and accept the honor. Otherwise your absence or lack of acceptance might detract from rather than add to the honoring of your coworker. Be there, accept your accolades and honor your friend. ♥

I think the other recipient/family will probably want you to be there with them.

And both honors are important. To others in addition, as well as to you.

It isn't all about any one person. Everyone who is involved matters to everyone there.

As far as your friend is concerned? I agree with the others, that yes, you should go to the event.

You might want to ask the organizers, if you can be allowed to say a few words about your friend who passed. And then, you can honor your friend that way.

I see no reason why both flags cannot be presented in the same ceremony.
