In 1953 he was a passenger airline pilot for the Czechoslovakian National Airline and flew a DC3 full of passengers to freedom in Germany. in 1956 he was hired by Bill Boeing as driver of the Miss Wahoo an unlimited hydroplane with spectacular results in racing competitions.

John Eales AM was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in December 2003 and was elevated to Legend of Australian Sport in December 2020 for his contribution to the sport of rugby union.

Widely regarded as one of the finest rugby players to represent his country, Eales was Australia’s most capped lock forward with 86 appearances and most capped captain with 55 appearances as skipper. He had also scored more points than any other forward in Australian Test history with a career total of 173. His 86 Test appearances upon his retirement made him the second most capped player in Australian rugby history behind David Campese (101 Tests).

Under his captaincy, the Wallabies became the world’s number one rugby team, while enjoying a reputation as great ambassadors for their country off the field.

Known For: Winning an Olympic marathon gold medal in 1960 while running barefoot.


Abebe Bikila was the very first Sub-Saharan African to ever win a gold medal at the Olympics.
He followed up his 1960 win with a second Olympic gold medal in 1964 in Tokyo – making him the first runner to win an Olympic marathon race twice.

In 1969 he was in a tragic car accident that left him partially paralyzed.
- Four year later he died from a cerebral hemorrage.
 
Kathrine Switzer (Born 1947)
Nationality: American
Known For: First woman to compete in the Boston Marathon with a numbered entry.

At a time when women were not allowed to be registered runners in the Boston Marathon, Kathrine Switzer managed to get a number.
--- During the race an official tried to forceably remove her from the race, but her boyfriend shoved the man away.
Switzer successfully completed the race and became a women’s rights icon.

Les Darcy

Born: 31 October 1895, Woodville
Died: 24 May 1917 (age 21 years), Memphis, Tennessee, United States

James Leslie Darcy was an Australian boxer.
He was a middleweight, but held the Australian Heavyweight Championship title at the same time. Les Darcy was the 2003 Inductee for the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame Old Timers category and was the first to be elevated to Legend status in 2009

He died at the age of 21 in Nashville chasing Boxing Fame.

The Path to Death
  1. Dental Injury: Darcy sustained a tooth injury during a boxing match in 1916.

  2. Infection: This injury led to a severe infection, which spread to his bloodstream as septicaemia.

  3. Hospitalisation & Surgery: Darcy was hospitalised in April 1917 and underwent dental surgery to remove his tonsils in an attempt to resolve the infection.

  4. Pneumonia: After the surgery, Darcy contracted pneumonia and rapidly deteriorated.

  5. Death: He died on May 24, 1917, from the combined complications of septicaemia, endocarditis, and pneumonia.
