I'm very happy to read this...finally !

My mother was abused by the Nuns who ran the orphanage she was in , and she was abused from the age of 2 until 16....

She and others were made to scrub floors on their hands and knees with freezing water, until their knuckles bled, and the Evil Nuns would kick the water bucket over, and they'd be made to dry it up... and given a beating for spilling it.. and they were routinely beaten with belts on the back, on the head, , on the legs . This was in a Scottish orphanage between 1936 and 1950 Might have been this same one, I don't know the name of the orphanage my mother was in..

I hope that Imprisoning these Nuns is the start of finding more, and giving them every bit of punishment they deserve..

Two nuns and a care worker who abused vulnerable youngsters at a notorious Scottish orphanage have been jailed for three years each.

Sister Sarah McDermott, 79, Sister Eileen Igoe, 79, and carer Margaret Hughes, 76, subjected children to terrifying ordeals at Smyllum Park in Lanark.

The three women denied any wrongdoing between 1969 and 1981 as they went on trial at Airdrie Sheriff Court.

But a jury took three days to find them guilty of a number of ‘cruel and unnatural’ incidents while children were in the care of the Order of the Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul.

Sheriff Scott Pattison said there was no alternative to prison for the three women as she handed them each a three year sentence.

A number of former residents told the trial they had been mistreated at Smyllum during the six week trial.

One woman said she was beaten by McDermott, of London, after she reported witnessing her brother being sexually abused in a toilet in the orphanage.

She said volunteer worker Brian Dailey, who was later jailed for 15 years for abusing youngsters, molested the three-year-old in a cubicle.

But rather than investigate the abuse, McDermott slapped the girl and told her she was bringing her ‘filthy home habits into a good Catholic place’.

McDermott also struck another girl with rosary beads and repeatedly struck her on the head and body.

Igoe, of Edinburgh, was convicted of abuse which included force feeding children and making one eat their own vomit as well as striking one boy on the head and body.

Hughes, of Lanark, seized one boy by the hair before striking him with her arm.

She also forced a girl into a freezing bath and held her head under water.
Smyllum closed in 1981 and has been at the centre of allegations of abuse.

The Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry said in 2018 youngsters had been sexually abused and beaten with leather straps, hairbrushes and crucifixes.

A report by Lady Smith, chair of the inquiry, said it was a place of ‘fear, threat and excessive discipline’ and that children found ‘no love, no compassion, no dignity and no comfort’ in Smyllum.

Sheriff Pattison said: ‘Each of you, in what you did and said, contributed to a culture in which children were demeaned and subjected to verbal and physical abuse.

‘While you were all younger at the time, you were all adults either in your 20s or 30s when you did these things.

‘While there was some discussion at trial about the existence of corporal punishment and reasonable chastisement, it is clear that the jury rejected that and in any event, what was described by those who gave evidence went way beyond what could ever be described as reasonable chastisement in any generation.

‘It would have been obvious to you all and anyone at the time that what you were doing was abusive and that it was criminal and you must have known what you were doing was wrong.

‘What should have been a home and a safe place, a safe haven even, for these children was a place of anxiety and fear.’

Three years each seems a ridiculously short time for the evil they perpetrated on so many.
I agree.. and tbh I don't think that prison will seem like a punishment to Nuns who lives in Sparse accommodation anyway.. and no-one is going to beat a nun up are they?.. so really it's hardly a punishment...but it's a start, and I hope they find more ...

3 years was definitely not enough time for the horrible abuse on those poor children. Native American children were taken away by the government from loving families to live in an institution run by nuns. 60 minutes interviewed the victims and it was heartbreaking to listen to their stories. If there’s a hell the nuns will be going.

between nuns and paedophile priests....where did we ever get the idea these people were the servants of God...may they all burn in Hades...

Actually across the ancient world humans have historically always abused others not just children. And yes, it is sick, disgusting, evil, shameful. No wonder according to Genesis scripture in Noah's days after earliest Mesopotamian civilization arose, God supposedly threatened to exterminate all humans. Those in modern times that complain like such is incredible are simply not aware of history. Beyond personal abuses are an incredible damming history of warmongering and killing. So it is never the Christian god but rather those evil hijacking religion.

Here in the USA many complain about the former use of African slaves. Yet few bother to investigate quite available historical records and scholarly research of how that was just the tip of a much worse status quo used and or tolerated by the majority of world powers. There once was a massive thriving commercial slave trade across the planet capturing beautiful Caucasian females both adults all the way down to children for Middle East and Far East sultans and wealthy.

Black Sea slave trade - Wikipedia

While African slave women were foremost bought as domestic laborers, white slave women were preferred for exclusively sexual slavery; as concubines or as wives. The Crimean slave trade was one of the biggest suppliers of women to the Ottoman Imperial Harem... Girls to the Imperial Harem were sent there as war captives during military campaigns, but also as gifts, or through purchase. Young virgin girls (normally arriving as children) were gifted to the Sultan from local statesmen, family members, grand dignitaries and provincial governors, and particularly from the Crimean Khan; Ahmed III received one hundred Circassian virgin girl slaves as presents upon his accession to the throne... Since they were bought for sexual purposes, the price of female slaves varied according to the girl's beauty,

It is always evil, but especially evil when the perpetrators were supposed to be protectors.
So it is in Germany too. This morning I heard the radio news which stated, that some German bishoprics had not yet investigated the cases of abuse by priests and nuns in their diocese. Even the archbishopric where I live hasn't done any investigations. Note that they should have started with these investigations 14 years ago! Oddly enough the archbishop of my diocese has resigned last year.

Thank you @Paco Dennis for adding that important input to this thread about the monstrous abuse so many evil humans have done to others. It is a prime reason I dropped out of society after becoming of age as an adult. As a Christian, I and others have been thoroughly saddened the way so many have used it for their evil. And as my above post shows, it is just the tip of a much larger ghastly evil that shames mankind that includes other religions and civilizations including all the historic great Western powers. Most of which have been members of powerful and wealthy classes. Something Jesus, if he exists, surely hates.

John 8:44 [Jesus talking to Pharisees] “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him."

But it is also true since civilizations rose, there has always been great human good done by multitudes of others, both religious and non-religious
Some might wonder, "Why David, do you still associate yourself with an organization that has done such evil?" And that is because the majority of ordinary folk and priests have been good well meaning people providing much good and help in the world, that I choose not to abandon for the sake of the putrid rot, I would rather work to cut out.

I am a Christian and I agree. These people are criminals. I believe their real punishment is yet to come as they account for every action to God.

one would hope that they never get near God... and they go straight to the eternal flames...
Oh they will go to God, as I believe we all do. To stand before Him and give an account of oneself. Then I believe a certain character with a pitchfork will welcome them to hell!

I have suffered as a child. I know the helplessness and fear children feel. Now I am enraged when I read of abuse and bullying. It must be punished by law and by God.

I am forever amazed at what can be rationalized in the name of God. Which of course means that God is whoever and whatever one wants it to be. This story reminds me of the long term incidents in Canada where children of indigenous parents were forcibly taken from them and abused by nuns and priests for many years under Canadian law. As with what God is the law is also whatever whoever says it is.
