Nursing Was My Calling

Being elderly and retired, we often review our lives and realize why we followed certain paths, such as in our chosen professions. Thinking back, I became interested in organisms at about the age of ten, when I caught frogs from a pond on my parents' property.

I too have an early memory of an encounter with a frog.

I was holidaying with my parents and younger sister at a guest house on a property that was on the bank of the mighty Hawkesbury River. This river was 90 ft deep in the channel. The current is quite strong.

I don't remember how I got hold of the frog but I remember holding it in my cupped hands and feeling its heart beating fast. I decided to take it down to the river and release it there.

Holding it gently I walked down the path to the jetty and let it go near a patch of reeds.

I remember how I felt that day - I felt love for that frog - and every time I do something for some little creature, I am reminded of that feeling.

What I did not know back then is that the reeds concealed many red bellied black snakes that lived there. I probably provided a frog dinner for one of them.

I don't recollect where my parents were that morning and I am amazed at the freedom to explore that was granted to me as a child. Amazed, and grateful.
