'This Is Not Normal': Nutella Riots Hit France After Stores Slash Prices

January 26, 2018

A promotional sale on Nutella was more successful than planned: Customers came to blows trying to get jars of the sweet spread after a grocery chain cut prices by 70 percent.

Hundreds of French citizens lost their savoir faire on Thursday, driven to desperation by a grocery chain's sudden 70 percent price drop for a jar of Nutella. Stories of "Nutella riots" began to spread; videos showed crowds of people shoving and yelling in supermarkets, trying to reach the jars.

The sweet spread, a blend of chocolate and hazelnut, set off bitter feelings after Intermarché slashed the price for a jar of Nutella from 4.50 euros to 1.41 euros — from $5.60 to around $1.75.

The result of the sale, says the regional daily Le Progres in the Loire regoin: "riot scenes everywhere." "

I pass it by when I see it in the stores, but after I read this news article, I think I'll buy a bottle to see what it's all about.

It is delicious. I first had it when I lived in Germany. Was so happy when they started carrying it here in the States.

Aldi sells it's own version that is made in Germany. I like it better than Nutella and it's cheaper.

It says on the jar not to refrigerate [because that makes it unspreadable]... but I prefer it cold on a [sturdy] spoon.

I love the taste of Nutella, hazelnut& cocoa. I usually put the spread on a piece of toast for breakfast. After dinner my dessert I put it on my apple slices. A perfect way to either start or end my day. Sue

The French love to protest, I heard on the radio
this morning that they had closed the port of Calais
with fishing boats, I have no idea why though.

Everything is expensive in Europe.

Mike.

, I buy it on occasion. It is pretty good, as a treat. Hubby likes to spread it on crackers. I, myself , like to make it into a Nutella and cream cheese sammy. YUM.

Try Nutella rolled up in a flour tortilla.

I also use flour tortilla with cream cheese and peanut butter [and jelly.]

Flour tortillas last a lot longer than regular bread.

I'm not crazy about Nutella, but we do buy it sometimes and have an open jar now. I like to keep it in the fridge to harden, and just take a spoonful as a chocolate treat. My husband likes to melt it over ice cream like hot fudge and add almonds. Can't believe people are fighting over this in stores. :D

Figuring that it might be kinda like Vegemite I've never tried Nutella.

I'd rather eat a live worms dipped in roofing tar than ever eat Vegemite again.....to me that stuff is just plum nasty tasting.

I never tasted vegemite Ike, but I think Nutella is completely different, it's hazelnuts and cocoa.

I make my own version. Much healthier and no dairy.

Nutella ingredients: sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skim milk, reduced minerals whey (milk), lecithin as emulsifier (soy), vanillin: an artificial flavor.

My ingredients: hazelnut butter, cocoa, sweetener.

I want to make it too! What ratio to the ingredients? Please!

1 cup hazelnut butter to 1½ tablespoons cocoa. Sweeten to taste with honey, dates or maple syrup. If it's too thick to spread, add a teaspoon or so of hazelnut oil or coconut oil.
