NY Governor Cuomo Commutes Sentence Of Old Radical Involved In 3 Murders

IMHO, governors (or presidents, for that matter) should not be messing about with sentences in serious crimes, like hers was. "Without parole" should also mean without commutation. Maybe she'll move in next door to Mr. Cuomo.

Many if not most pardons, commutations etc are the result of request and/or favor for someone. It could be a daisy chain of requests, favors etc. The question is who has the pull to get this kind of high profile commutation/favor done. Who wants her out and who said they could do it or get through to the governor.

I certainly don't believe in the death penalty but I do think what the judge said at sentencing should be abided by unless a mistake was made and the person is pardoned due to error.

It it was error, an appeal years ago would have solved that. And it wasn't actual innocence, either; as I recall, there was no question of that. This woman was, and probably still is, a member of violent domestic terrorist groups.

This was a violent felony that involved the deaths of two police officers and a security guard during a the Brinks robbery. IMO, governors should have no right whatsoever to free violent felons. It's not like this was a petty drug charge or some kind of white collar thing -- three people died that day.

Apparently this is just the beginning. Cuomo Pardoned 101 people this year. He wanted to start a program to help people convicted in their teens of NON violent offenses. His 'program' aims to pardon up to 10,000.

This commutation speeds up Clarke's first eligible parole hearing from 2056 to this year.
