NYC Police Tell Google To Dump App That Shows Speed & Sobriety Traps

"Users on Waze, a Google navigation app featuring crowdsourced traffic updates, have apparently been helping one another avoid city's sobriety checkpoints. The NYPD is none too pleased about the sneaky drunk driving hack: On Saturday, it hit Google with a sternly-worded letter, accusing the tech giant of tacitly undermining the city's goal of Vision Zero, a New York free of traffic fatalities."

I've never used WAZE, but it's very popular as navigation aid and many people find it useful. It's main purpose is not to "warn" people about sobriety checkpoints, but to have up-to-the minute traffic incident reporting of all kinds. I guess I really don't have an opinion about it because people can always text all their friends the same info.

I don’t have it but did consider at one time for traffic.

I don’t drink so don’t worry about any check points.

Ill admit to driving a little faster than the speed on certain roads but only because Im keeping up with traffic.

My friend told that to an officer when he got pulled over.

The officer told him you were all speeding.

Technology Wins

Police use technology to issue tickets for speeding, red light running and cameras in high crime areas. Why can't we use technology to help us too?

Can't stand and abhor drunk driving but it's not exactly a function that exposes undercover detectives or a secret investigation. These check points are in public on public streets in which the public can communicate any way they like. Wether a drunk driver is nabbed or avoids driving drunk in that area the purpose seems served.

The PSP (Pennsylvania State Police) have a policy that we will put our checkpoints and dates in the newspapers before the date. Speed traps are not posted, but DUI checkpoints are.

I guess the problem is that a driver under the influence can check to see where the police are, and then use an alternate route to avoid being stopped. So in a way, it's enabling people to drive drunk.

Maybe we should have zero tolerance laws. When I lived in Hungary that’s what they had and I don’t recall too many car accidents.

Also...if you are caught driving drunk...after one DUI you lose your license for a year.

If this can dissuade the more 'casual' drinker/driver that's a good thing because the ignorant or hardcore drunks probably don't pay attention to public notice, websites, newspaper etc. See too many stories where many arrested drunk drivers have over 1/2 dozen offenses which tells me they don't care. Many hardcore drinkers tend to have a favorite spot which can limit their options.

Around here one town checks you out if you turn off the road with the checkpoint in sight which is usually about a block before which is bs because many simply don't want the hassle and lost time.

In the land of the free and the home of the brave you are perfectly within your rights to avoid being stopped and checked whether you have been drinking or not.

The police have no business trying to tell Google to delete the app.

Move your checkpoint if you want to avoid the app.

I'm sure there will be people caught app or no app.
