Oakland Athletics Announcer Fired After Saying Racial Slur on the Air

Still love 50's & 60's music!
He meant to say that he visited the ***** League Museum in Kansas City. But instead another "N" word came out of his mouth. Making a reference to the black players who played baseball before the breaking of the color barrier, is probably the only time I hear the word "*****" anymore, when someone is talking about the old ***** leagues in baseball. But the other "N'" word should never come out of your mouth, unless it is in your vocabulary already, and you have used that word before.

I just noticed the less offensive N word, isn't allowed either on this forum. Looks like I said something wrong also. Oops!

Google automatically censors certain words. I know you meant no offense.

That "other N word" should never come out of anyone's mouth, whether it's already in their vocabulary or they've used that word before. It is simply unacceptable on any level. No excuses. It's a sure-fire way to lose your job.

I do not allow that word in my house.

I hate the first word and would never use it, but have always had trouble understanding why the latter was so bad. It simply means black in Spanish?! Of course, if my friends took offense I would never use that either!
Exactly.. when I lived in Spain for many years.. and even when I'm back there on my trips.. the word n. egro.. meaning Black is used in every day language..and I suspect the same in Mexico

I haven't heard anyone use the harsher N word since I was a kid in the 1960s.

It blows my mind that anyone would still have that on their recent repertoire of words.

The announcer is getting older and does a job where most of what he says, he says without thinking because he's done it so many times in 20 years.

I would like to see people in his position be able to apologize for something like what he did because it was a slip of the tongue and not said in a malicious way.

I'm trying to work out what words you meant... is it N...igg-er.. and Ne--gro ?
I give you a lot of credit Holly for even just spelling the words. Even though some black people use those words when speaking with one another, a white man talking that talk can get them in a world of hurt here in the U.S.

Anytime people say they have never said the word, or used the word, or heard the word, I seriously doubt their integrity. It’s a word that has for the most part been outlawed, except not legally so.

Ohioboy knows more about this than I do, but I can tell you that on several occasions, the federal courts have not been consistent with their rulings as to whether calling a black person the “N” word is part of the hate crime laws or not. Most rulings that I have read have supported the way in which it was used or said. If you see a black person across the street and you yell to him, “Hey n———-.” That’s nothing and it falls under the first amendment. However, if you see a black person across the street and you yell to him, “Hey n———r, get out of my neighborhood or I will shoot you.” That is a hate crime because you have introduced a physical threat of body harm.

The best I can say is, just don’t use the word for more reasons that just that. If I had my way, there are certain words that if used in public would carry a misdemeanor and fine. Why people feel they have to use the “N” word, the “F” word and other foul words is beyond me. I look at it as being on a diet and having to give up sugar. They can’t seem to do because they have been doing it for so long, it has become normal to them.

I’m no goody-two shoes, but if I’m having a conversation with someone and they begin to use the “F” word, I tell them straight out. “If you’re going to talk like that using that language, this conversation is over.” I don’t use the word and I don’t expect anyone who speaks to me to use the word. And that’s all I have to say on the topic.

Here’s the problem with that automatic censorship. I made a post some time ago about our Amazon River cruise. I mentioned the Rio N..e..g..ro, an actual name, no slur intended or implied, but those pesky asterisks appeared instead. How stupid.
In my lifetime I went through bewildering changes from N..e..g..r..o ... to Colored ... to Black. I (as well as the majority) didn't think any of these terms was offensive! African American is the latest but awkward appellation. Which is fine by me! Aren't I gracious?
