Obtaining a replacement Social Security card

After spending more time than necessary, I decided that maybe I should see about getting a SS card. I got my original in 1960 since lost or misplaced, never really needed one til now, found it would have been less painful than not having one. I found a few sites that would get me one for a fee. As much as $50. Then decided to login to the SS site.

Easy/Peasy, 5 minutes later I had ordered one for FREE. This AM got an email telling me my request had been accepted, my new card will be mailed & I should have it in a week. Next will be an ID card from our DMV (for a fee) so I will have 2 forms of acceptable photo identification. Everybody wants a piece of the pie.

I have not carried my SS card for decades. I do know where it is filed should I ever need it. By not carrying it there is virtually no chance that I will lose it. It does not have my picture on it. My drivers license does have my picture. So does my passport.

When I was receiving Unemployment due to being let go in June 2020, they suddenly decided it was fraudulent and they needed to claw back everything I had received. I was required to provide 3 types of identification and go on a Zoom call to present each one.

One of the forms of identification was an original Social Security card. I didn't have one. I ordered it from their site and received it fairly quickly. Crisis averted.

I'm not sure if I'll ever need 2 photo IDs or not. Don't fly but it seemed that everybody I called over the ID/IRS letter verification wanted 2 photo documents and a copy of my taxes along with a copy of my SS card. So it seemed like a good idea.

The Social Security Administration — your local office or the SSA website — are where to get a new card. Not sure from your description what those other sites were; sounds like it could have been a bit fishy. But, as you said, crisis averted.

The SSA does not contract with any agency, it was a 100%scam.

Correct, had to find out for myself. Didn't go beyond the home page, luckily I didn't fall for it too fishy as said.

I'm in Pennsylvania. We are finally getting our license identity program up to national standards. We need a SS card to get renewed. Like everybody, I lost it decades. The best and easiest way to go is call them up. Just google nearest SSA office.
