Do you have a favourite"small shop" you like and support?😉

And, why?

While they last. Battling both big chain and big box competition and the building is being eyed for razing and gentrification like so much else in this block. They've been here or close nearby for a very long time.

Old-timey inside, staff know their stock and how to use it. Very knowledgeable and helpful. They carry some oddball stuff and can order things they don't have and get the right thing. They can make keys, mix paint colors, sharpen lawnmower blades and good scissors, even axes and saws.

The shop where I take my vehicle for service.

They have been in the same family and in the same location since 1929, a real old fashioned garage that provides a dozen or so real jobs and provides a valuable service to the locals as well as the folks that commute in from the suburbs for work.

My car is there today having an annual safety inspection, routine maintenance, and getting my snow tires mounted. I’m waiting for the call to walk over and pick it up.

It was Bargain Town up until Goodwill Industries took it over.

There was also a family-owned bakery I frequented. This Mom & Pop started selling super-yummy baked goods out of their kitchen back in the late 60s, converted their garage into a little bakery shop in the 70s, and their kids took it over and built an expanded area onto it in the 80s.

In the early 2000s, the city started getting on the family's case about licensing and zoning and taxes, and the shop closed in 2018. The grandkids apparently went on to bigger careers anyway, so it worked out alright. I sure miss the old lady's breads, pastries, and pies, though. :(
