When I was still on the Force, 3 of us Troopers were trained to give anti-bullying messages to high school students. I wanted to mention this sooner, but lost track of time until I saw Monica Lewinsky on TV this morning. When Monica went through the mess that she did back in the late ‘80’s, I felt really bad for her. She couldn’t go anywhere without being humiliated. She said this morning that her dignity had been taken away from her.
Bullying takes place mostly in schools. But, it doesn’t stop there. The internet makes a great tool for those people that enjoy intimidating, scaring and/or making people feel bad about themselves. Several children have committed suicide over cyber-bullying. I personally have investigated 1 of these suicides. It broke my heart to see that 13 y/o little girl hanging from her closet rail with a boa wrapped around her neck.
Although we don’t hear about it as much as we once did, bullying is still alive and well. We need to be alert to our grandkid’s actions and emotions. Unnecessary crying is usually an indication that something is amiss. Other signs are; depression, becomes withdrawn, becomes anxious, if they have any bruises or cuts that are unexplainable, answering the phone and then quickly hanging up, start speaking about death, asking about a will or give away their personal belongings.
It’s time to stop this type of bad behavior. If you think or have reason to believe that any of your grandkids are being bullied, don’t be shy about speaking to them or urging them to speak with their school guidance counselor.
