October Is Bullying Prevention Month

When I was still on the Force, 3 of us Troopers were trained to give anti-bullying messages to high school students. I wanted to mention this sooner, but lost track of time until I saw Monica Lewinsky on TV this morning. When Monica went through the mess that she did back in the late ‘80’s, I felt really bad for her. She couldn’t go anywhere without being humiliated. She said this morning that her dignity had been taken away from her.

Bullying takes place mostly in schools. But, it doesn’t stop there. The internet makes a great tool for those people that enjoy intimidating, scaring and/or making people feel bad about themselves. Several children have committed suicide over cyber-bullying. I personally have investigated 1 of these suicides. It broke my heart to see that 13 y/o little girl hanging from her closet rail with a boa wrapped around her neck.

Although we don’t hear about it as much as we once did, bullying is still alive and well. We need to be alert to our grandkid’s actions and emotions. Unnecessary crying is usually an indication that something is amiss. Other signs are; depression, becomes withdrawn, becomes anxious, if they have any bruises or cuts that are unexplainable, answering the phone and then quickly hanging up, start speaking about death, asking about a will or give away their personal belongings.

It’s time to stop this type of bad behavior. If you think or have reason to believe that any of your grandkids are being bullied, don’t be shy about speaking to them or urging them to speak with their school guidance counselor.

Thanks for reading.

@911

The Lewinsky scandal happened in the 90s (not 80s). She was basically a kid. Even though Bill Clinton finally admitted having an inappropriate relationship with an intern, Monica paid the price. Despite all her education, at 46 she hasn't been able to find a job and hasn't married or even had a lasting relationship.

Thanks for the correction. It was 1998 when it was reported. (Stupid big fingers.)

Sorry, but comparing bullying an innocent child in school to bullying a sleazebag who has sex with a married pig of a man is not a valid comparison. Monica Lewinsky earned her bullying by helping a cheating liar (Bill Clinton) cheat on his wife.

At the time I thought Lewinsky went to DC with a little debauchery in mind. Silly, stupid young females during that time (and maybe still now) got a huge charge out of being able to flirt/play games and make a male do something really stupid. It was an especially big ego boost if she was a little lower on the attraction scale.

She paid a big price for the fun and games. Actually they both did.

I saw Monica on television this morning and thought that it was an attempt to stay relevant and in the public eye.

I do feel bad for all that she has gone through. Having her private life become a national joke but it seems to me that every few years she resurfaces in an effort to create a new career in the spotlight. I would take her more seriously if she simply went about her life without the need for media attention and public approval.

As far as bullying goes it does need to stop not just in our schools but also in forums just like this one. For some reason, the anonymity of the internet tends to bring out the worst in some people. It also seems that when the moderators ease up on restrictions some people tend to push the envelope and become bolder in their comments. If we can't learn to control and police our own behavior we can't expect more from the young folks in our lives.
