The UK's oddest days out

The weather's on the turn, pushing day trippers indoors. So what are the idiosyncratic UK attractions that help us to laugh in the face of inclement conditions, asks Gareth Rubin.
Summer defied the apocalyptic predictions of the meteorologists. The sun shone. Al fresco activities became almost second nature to Britons. But as normal weather and reality return, how will we all cope?
It shouldn't actually be too hard. Britain has developed arguably the world's greatest range of idiosyncratic days out.
They are more a part of the national DNA than Dad's Army, warm crumpets and the Wombles put together. Yes, if you want to know what Britain is all about, you only need to visit a few of the following:

Anytime TG anytime.:D

A few of those are fairly near to me, the Cumberland Pencil Museum is just under 50 miles away. Southport and Stockport about 2 hours away. Been to all three places but never visited the museums.

Will join you in the hunt for Nessie. ;)

I have known so many people who were lucky enough to visit the UK, but (LOL) I honestly don't think they got much further than the Pubs, as that's all they talked about....that and the changing of the guards. Sad, huh? I know it's extremely beautiful and I know they enjoyed far more than your beverages, as all of them said they couldn't wait to go back.

Great links you posted!

We spent 6 weeks in the UK and travelled around by hire car. I think we visited every historic bridge in the England, Scotland and Wales. The UK is remarkable for its well preserved sites and whatever the weather there is always something amazing to be seen. To someone from a country with a much shorter history, not withstanding the aboriginal culture, the UK is a source of much wonder.

Who would have thought that you could still see a clapper bridge from Roman times, the first blast furnace and the first iron bridge and even John Dalton's model atoms that he used to explain his atomic theory? The beauty of so many villages that look like film sets but which are still living villages was breathtaking for me.

There's a lot more to Britain than pubs and pageantry.

If I am honest Katybug, tourists probably see more of England than what the residents see........................................except of course the pubs.:D
