Oh, God! Why are you reading this?

There must be someone else who can do it for less than $270. Maybe ask on your community forum. Do you have a seniors’ centre that has listing for handy men. I’m so tempted to comment on those few items used and what’s happening to you. o_O

I got an estimate of $270 to replace my porch light. $270 ???
I'm the one who installed it 30 years ago- a couple of screws and a few wires!!! So, me and my imperial cheapness decided I could save $270 by doing it myself. I got everything ready, cut the power, and clumsily climbed up the step ladder. That's when the clouds parted and sunlight hit the area- you dumb jackass, you 're 80 and disabled. The best outcome would have been a broken hip. As much as it galls me, I'll have to fork over $270.
Well, it won't be that bad. I'll scrimp. I'll just have to eat the beef cat food, rather than the cheap sardine ones. 🙂
Get another estimate! Get another estimate?

I hear you, spectratg. But I live about 40 miles from any large population area. There's very few handy man businesses around, so I have to pay for "travel time". I have to fork over $100 + just for a plumber to show up.

Now you get me started! You are soooo right about few people have a "slim fit" body. No woman over 16 should wear leggings. Ever. Anywhere. And I don't really want to see which side men wear their pants.

AND...women's pants pockets are useless! Too shallow, too narrow, nothing much will fit in them. I wear men's pants for this very reason. Relaxed fit. Better made, better material, and cheaper. So there.

Edit: And prairie dogs are hard to get rid of, too. I know one farmer that drops some sort of explosive down their tunnel and he says that works pretty well...

I wear Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda jeans and slacks and they have deep pockets. And they are often on sale. My Athletic brand capris from Walmart also have good pockets. I need my pockets!

I live where there's two conglomerate medical groups. Both have big hospitals, and I swear there's a group clinic every ten feet. One is St. Lukes, and the other Lehigh Valley. I have docs in both those groups. So that means I have to have 2 apps on my phone, etc. It's dumb, but when I'm seeing a doc in one group, I feel like I'm trading with the "enemy." I've had docs, who were independent, but went over to the dark side and joined the group. Then , when you call: instead of getting Beth, the receptionist, you get " Enter 1 for......................."

About the shit pocket thing. When looked around Penny's none of the shirts had pockets. I found this WSJ. item about J. Crew, Penny's and more are phasing out shirt pockets. Personally, I think it's just a way to making shirts cheaper.

That does seem a bit much. Not sure of your porch set up but would a solar porch light work for you.
I saw that some of them are even motion sensors. Now I need one. I see Walmart has some nice ones.
More business for Walmart. Nathan already made me buy a frog parking sign. :D

Edit I see Aunt Bea and I have the same thought. I did see that some of the lights have a little separate solar panel that maybe you could put in the sun. Google says there are solar lights that work in the shade. Who knows how well they work though.
My bathroom clock died, so I went to get another one, and what the heck, get some new tighty whities. The last time I bought new ones, Clinton was President. In the men's dept., everything is "slim fit". "Slim fit "tees, jeans, shirts, etc. This is America! Have you seen us? No male over the age of 28 has a skinny fit anything. And there were NO tighty whities  I did not want sacks, pouches, silks, thongs, low riders, floral patterns,!!!! I want tighty whities. That brought back the memory of when my grand dad was upset because stores didn't carry long johns any more. That made me feel like I rode in on a dinosaur. And no, it wasn't a "slim fit" dinosaur.:(

I feel your pain. I was slim fit once upon a time. The husband was never slim fit.
Although he was a tad slimmer when we first got married in the 70's. Went from a 3xl to a 6xl.
I remember how appalled he was the first time I bought him colored Underoos.

I got "preliminary estimates " for replace 13 boards in my deck- $4,000-10,000. Even at the cheap end, it comes out to about $400 per board. I built that deck in one afternoon. Now, my problem is finding solid gold boards to go with the cost of replacing them. I've gotten lots of emails from a siding washing company really wanting to wash my home. They want to see my home to give an estimate. Sure. come on up. Nobody has shown up, yet. 😡 I've been saving up so I can get a lot taken care of so, hopefully, in the next five years, I won't have much to worry about. Now, it seems like I have to worry about legal fees for strangling one of these contractors.

$4K-$10k???!! Woah, Nellie!

A few months ago, I decided to replace "a few boards" on this deck. When those boards were removed, we found a LOT more damage/rot in the supporting structure and ended up tearing down the entire deck and rebuilding, using Trex for all horizontal surfaces, pressure treated lumber coated in rubber coat for supports, ice and water shield covering some parts, and metal covers (like fascia covers) for boards that are exposed to long-term snow buildup. I don't remember what it cost but it wasn't near $4K (it was lower).

One thing I do is purchase the materials myself so there is no markup by the contractor. It also saves contractor time. In addition, it protects me from any problem if the contractor doesn't pay for the materials. I had that happen once; the supplier placed a mechanics lien against the house. Most materials will fit in the back of the mini-van when the seats are folded down. A couple of times, the materials wouldn't fit in the mini-van so the lumber yard delivered them, which cost a smallish fee ($25?).

The latest large project, replacing siding all around, produced a LOT of trash (the old siding). The contractor would have hauled it away but it was so much that the dump fees would have been pretty high. It was cheaper, easier, and faster to rent a dumpster for a few weeks.

Good Luck to you on your repairs/reno's. You have my sympathy!

Hey, thanks for the info. Hopefully, the damage will be just the boards. They are pressure treated, but I used lots of salt on them in winter, without thinking of the consequences.
