I was sleeping, big dog got up from the floor and started whining at me. I was not ready to get up so I reach out to pet him, get him to lay back down. He kindly did so. Closed my eyes and drifted back off.

I rolled over, my eyes fluttered and I saw something move. I jumped from the bed, saw nothing. Okay, I am tired, I am dreaming. Get back in the bed, back to sleep. Later, I wake, trying to get comfortable.

There on the pillow next to me is sure enough a mouse!! Just sitting there preening. Holy crap, I have never had a mouse in the house. Here he is with me, three dogs in the room, two of them on the bed, yet, he did not have a care in the world!! No, I did not scream, just threw the pillow off the bed.

Looks like I need to go to the hardware store to find a way to catch him. Got to find a way to do it without using something that could be a problem with the dogs. I am not pleased, I don't want to hurt the little guy but I do not want him in the house.

Wow! That would have given me a fright! I used to work with mice in the lab. They are basically blind and when they walk, they usually favor the perimeters of the walls for guidance. For the mouse to be up on your pillow, that's an amazing feat. You might have had your blanket resting on the floor and he scampered up that way. How else did he get there??

Meanwhile, that means you have some opening in your house that he entered. They only need a crack to get it. When we first moved into our house, there were noises going "bump in the night" and eventually, we found we had a mouse in the kitchen. The evidence were the mouse droppings - tiny, hard, and black. So we sealed the area (underneath the kitchen sink) and brought in a pest control guy who placed enclosed traps in several places. Never had problems since then (knock on wood!).

We live in a rural area, and this time of year mice often find their way into the basement....usually if I have one of the garage doors open. So, starting in mid/late September, I always set a half dozen mousetraps. I put a couple near the garage doors, and the rest on the basement shelves where we store some extra food items. I've already captured/crushed one near the garage doors, and if it's a normal year, I'll probably eliminate 3 or 4 more in coming weeks.

Mothballs work great for other critters too. I had a groundhog dig a hole under my garden shed far enough that I can't fill it back in. Ever since, I'll get another groundhog or skunk that will take up residence in the spring. Tossing mothballs down it makes them leave.

I had a mouse in the basement last month. Three cats & none of them noticed. Hubby put out a trap & we got him. So far no others have come in.

House built in 1945 and has a crawl space beneath
Every few years I get a field mouse. Never rats thankfully
Have a pet door that could be the mouse entrance
I use old school mouse spring traps
Bait it with a pinch of bread rolled into a dough ball, with a drop of honey on top
Gets 'em every time. Their last happy thought is probably of the sweetest thing they ever tasted

@palides2021, he may have got up that way or climbed up the headboard. I did not know mice have bad vision. I just thought it strange that he did not seem concerned about being so close to a human or to my dogs.

I was shocked to see him as I have never had one in the house, much less my bedroom. I would think they would prefer the kitchen where there is food storage.

I will not use those little traps that snap because of the dogs. All I would catch is one of them by the tongue when licking the bait. LOL

Lizards in the house I am used to, that happens a few times a year. Not afraid of them at all either. They are just hard to catch know that I am older. Fast little buggers.

oh noooooooooooooo I would have had a fit!!! We lived in apt complex once and had one, had it cornered and it slipped through a tiny crack. talked to manager and the guy there put out traps (I felt really bad) . One day I was vacuuming living room and I had the bright idea to roll on in kitchen and do the floor there too and all of a sudden I hear this loud squealing noise as I pushed the vacuum back and forth just an awful noise and my vacuum stopped working.

I can't say for sure because we never looked in bag but I think that mouse got caught in that vacuum. I took it to repair shop and I told them what I thought happened and it cost us 35.00 to fix and I never saw mouse again.I never ask them what they found I did not want to know.

I hope you catch it, on your pillow no less. I would not be a happy camper.

I have a dog and Mason pretty much learned not to mess with the traps after setting a couple off.
Not only that, I learned where not to put the traps where Mason is most tempted.
Besides, I put them in areas that are relatively hard for him to get to.
Examples are behind room doors. He doesn't check behind doors. On counters and on, under, behind furniture.
Also just inside closet doors.

This what we have put in our basement. :)

A mouse I can deal with.....a rat, I would have to call in the professionals. I do see them at night outside. I have had trouble with neighbors that put out rat poison. The problem is that often a rat will carry a poison pack in to someone else's yard. It puts the neighborhood dogs and cats at risk. God forbid if a child got into one.

I worked in Brooklyn in the ghetto. In the court yard of our building there were rats as big as small cats!

Just today I caught a mouse on glue paper.

Center left a catch and release trap for raccoons, etc.; center rights a catch and release trap for squirrels

Bottom left is for rats outside the house and in the attic; bottom right is for mice

Years ago I used poison for gophers in the garden. Then our cat ate half a gopher and died. Ever since I have been very careful with poison.

Regrettably, California has outlawed the most effective poisons for getting rid of unwanted critters.

Hope debudun reads your post. She has a pretty unique way of catching mice & releasing them far from her home.

We have been getting a steady stream of mice. Can't figure how they're getting in. And we are not doing anything 'humanely'. Sticky trap, snap trap. We have caught 4 in the last 8 weeks. Thought of getting an exterminator, but will put out traps everywhere in the house and see what happens. I don't know how many mice are 'lurking' outside ready to come in.

You might think about getting an exterminator, at least to help you find out where they are coming in from. Mice bring diseases with them. Also, look for mice droppings which also is a clue.

Please tell me, I am all for catching but I am not taking them on a drive to the country. Mice have their purpose in the world just not on my pillow or in my house. I would treat them just like do the lizards put them back outside.

Like I say this is the first one. The next door neighbor has a cat, precious thing, I think it would be called a calico. They got it as a kitten and it was a house kitten. As it grew up it wanted to be outside most of the time. She took to the dog door for her comings and goings. She probably helps keep the mouse population in check.

I caught one just today on glue paper inside the house. Usually I find them in the trash can. No idea how they get in, but they can't get out.

I know about those little sticky pads but if one got stuck on it the dogs would eat it dead or alive. I can't have that at all. I think I will look for one that is more a catch and release container.
