I was just a child -but had this thing for film stars' always pasting pic and cut outs from anywhere ,loved the way they dressed up -and they were handsome
and beautiful back then 'not like today =yes another era of course ' but the glam dont exist anymore sad to say,
was the stars picked then just for how they looked ' film companies wanted lookers it seemed to me ' but of course people like Bette davis was brilliant actress ' my favourite who stood out the most for me was the lovely sexy rita Hayworth - things are so more relaxed today within the studio's. think glam stars had to obey all the rules even with marriages .. was u a very young film star follower like me ..glitz and glitter era!
 

The aimed-for look these days seems to be more geared to the "shock value" than for "glam". Look at the Academy Awards...…..it used to be that everyone was slick and glamorous and coiffeured and gussied up to the max. Now, it's who has the most shocking gown or outfit and lank greasy hair. Of course, there are still exceptions, the "ladies" and "gentlemen" of Hollywood who can still be counted on to show up dressed in their best, looking like a million dollars.

OK, so I'm a grouchy old curmudgeonette, but for the love of Pete, at least wash and brush your hair!
 
IMO much of it was just an illusion created by the studio moguls at a time when the media kept one eye closed about peoples personal lives in exchange for a few interviews and glam shots of the rich and beautiful at play.

Today the media and the public seem to value reports that tear down the rich and famous only to follow them a few months later with stories cheering the courageous comeback/redemption of the fallen.
 

"Control" is the key word and it started as soon as studios formed and the powerful two or three people dictated what appeared on the screens. Censorship kicked in after a few years but starting in the 60s the coin got flipped. Today sex is crammed in to every plot regardless what it is and guns are substituted for plots. There is a series on Showtime called "City On A Hill" and I don't recall anything on TV or at the theaters where the F Bomb dominates the dialogue like that show. Also today children are included in the violence and the sex. Why? Keep in mind the writers sit down and make sure all of this goes to the screen. Animation is inserted in to actors roles. Special effects are substituted for plots. Ask yourself this question now that we have just seen two incidents of mass shootings, how many shootings are depicted on network television only every week? Hollywood is disintegrating due to so many streaming medias and it appears "control" has left the building.
 
Murder has always had biggest interest for any play, story, book, movie, TV show- since the dawn of civilization. The deaths of humans have always been at the center of countless tales and games.
 
Glam Hollywood is still here...much moreso on the red carpet than in the movies though (not the protesters who wore all black once though). Here's Beyoncé looking glam'd up old-Hollywood style...

Seems to go along with everything else in society. Most "events" that we all dressed for years ago are now a free-for-all of jeans and t-shirts. (Church services, funerals, weddings, etc.) Plus nowadays, the "celebrities" are all plastic... fake teeth, fake boobs, fake hair, etc. :rolleyes:
 
Most of the glamor of old "Hollywood" was manufactured in press releases, publicity events and planted news stories in sham "fan" magazines. It was a creation of press agents. "I'd like to thank the Academy....." Those are the lines you've heard in the glitz of the Acadamey Awards. But all that glamor was a very non-glamorous attempt to foil unions in the entertainment industry. Image is way better than reality.
