"Old Time" Religion may be good or it may not be good!

The OP lyrics post was sure to get quick responses from those that tend to use their emotions to overwhelm meaning read or heard and then avoid considering what words mean instead of clearly thinking. Same flawed emotional response behavior also occurs with other controversial subjects like politics, abortion, gender issues, and social media discourse about popular sports teams.

Johnny Cash by qualifying "old time" and "Paul and Silas" meant the Jesus taught beliefs early Christians actually started and professed despite immense pressures threatening their lives. By ending that with "it gets abused by abusive men", Johnny meant it is organized religion controlled by religious authorities that have historically tended to hijack beliefs for their own agendas. That is why Jesus himself condemned Jewish Levite sect leaders for centuries of accumulated rot that went far beyond what their god originally intended with the simple set of Ten Commandments to be followed.

Unfortunately many emotionally so cannot separate religion and those who practice whatever from Jesus taught beliefs, so intensely react to both as being the same. They single mindedly point to a long history of religious wrongs committed by religions. Making this worse is many Christian denominations believe in flawed Bible inerrancy to justify their beliefs. The below is an excellent summary of ways the Christian religion has been attacked so as well as short following criticisms of why such is overstated.

Criticism of religion - Wikipedia

Some argue that religious violence confuses religious moral rules and behaviour with non-religious factors. This includes the claim that events like terrorist bombings are more politically motivated than religious. Mark Juergensmeyer argues that religion "does not ordinarily lead to violence. That happens only with the coalescence of a peculiar set of circumstances—political, social, and ideological—when religion becomes fused with violent expressions of social aspirations, personal pride, and movements for political change"...
Studies on the actual beliefs held by scientists show that most scientists globally do not subscribe to conflict thesis and instead the majority believe that the relation between science and religion is independence or collaboration.

My own casual web responses here and elsewhere to religious threads tend to be verbose, narrowly carefully crafted that in doing so leave little able to be attacked. And when they are, it is usually by those tossing out small minded baiting expecting a defensive response they then become disturbed over when I decline by relating further discussion of such complex subjects herein has little purpose beyond sharing the range of summary personal viewpoints with others.

That is why I started my recent below partly religious thread that is more presentation of a worthwhile complex subject I encourage others to read or watch than discuss herein. And note, I will soon be adding more to that thread.

Not to take a side in the matter but something tells me there is more to this question of consciousness (Life, religion, Christianity, Atheism, Agnosticism and every other ism) than most people ever even consider. The universe is a big place and full of surprises. We are far from figuring it out. I am always willing to adjust my opinions according to what knowledge is uncovered or what latest truth is revealed. Guess I'll just have to wait until I get there to see what is waiting for me at the end. But I suspect it's probably just me.
