Old Vinyl Long Playing Records.

I have over 200 LPs collected over the years, from 1960 on, my Wife would say from time to time when are you going to get rid of all those old records? you hardly ever play them (Debateable), anyway, did a value check online and was surprised at how valuable some of them are, case in point The "Beatles Please Please Me" 1963 first pressing (see pic). which I have!!
Did more searching and many old early Pink Floyd and many other artists are also worth hundreds of dollars, do you have any Vinyl LPs, and more to the point do you play them?
Played today Dire Straits "Communiqué" on Vinyl, there is no sound like it, you would think they were in the room!

Yes, I have tons of vinyl. My brother and sister grew up in the 60s and of course that's all there was to buy in those days.
Beach Boys, Jefferson Airplane, Beatles, Cream..etc

I have bought a new style turntable w/hopes of playing some of the albums in my closets.
Got rid of the Marantz years ago. (that was a stupid thing to do)
 
I built shelves specifically for my albums and recently bought a phono pre-amp so they would work with my receiver, which didn't have one built in. I would suspect that with the recent resurgence of popularity of vinyl many new receivers would have them. My receiver is about 15 years old, so it's pre-vinyl resurgence. My turntable is an old Technics from the late '70s. It still works just fine!

That said, I kind of prefer peace and quiet these days. So it all just sits there, collecting dust.

Ahhh come on Ben sure must have some nice relaxing Vinyl LPs, very nostalgic playing old records, brings back memories too.
 
My husband transferred boxes of his favourites to digital. He then let his 3 grandkids sort through them for what they wanted. He still has many boxes to go. It may sound crazy to go digital when so many want vinyl but we know we won’t be in this house forever.

Sounds like a good idea, but just my opinion, even digital sounds nothing like records in good condition on a nice stereo system,but each to there own.
 
I've slowly been putting a nice system together for the shop. Still have my old Pioneer PL-350 turntable, which has an issue with the auto return that I need to sort out. I left the vast majority of my collection with a friend many years ago, as payment for doing some damage to his car. Still have 50 or so, and plan on listening to them soon, and most likely purchasing some new ones.

Sounds great and good on you, mind you new vinyl LPs cost around $60.00 or $70.00 here in Australia!
 
I have a bunch, they are stored in the top of a closet, yes, standing up, not laying flat. I have our stereo system stored in a closet we puchased in the early 80's. Technic is the brand name, I think was the thing then. My husband was in charge of those purchases. I have those huge speakers stored in the closet as well. I know there is the turntable, a receiver, is it an equalizer?, I think a cassette player, he added a CD player at some point, again, not my thing. It is all in the original cabinet, with the lovely smoked glass front. He called himself the Prince of Power!! Still makes me laugh, he was so proud. Can anyone tell me about this thing.

My son is a deejay and even with the new way of deejaying for parties using computers and digital equipment, he still favors vinyl. A few years ago he and a few of his deejay colleague-friends, did an all vinyl Old Skoolers ball. The venue was packed and a great time was had by all. The deejays spun all types of music...R & B, Hip Hop, Latin, Reggae..you name it. Here's my son as he was preparing for his set.

I have probably a couple of hundred albums but I don't listen to them anymore because everything is so easily accessible on YouTube. My son must easily have more than 2,000. He lost a lot of LPs when the storage unit where he kept some of them got flooded. There was a time when deejays bought two of everything if they were into scratching and sampling. My son has a 6 ft by 6 ft bookshelf full of albums plus several in crates.

Yes, hubs would always quote that and something about harmonic distortion. Like I said, not my thing but he was my prince of power!
 
My parents had an old wind-up record player in a cabinet - like the Victrolas - and some 78s. My sister has it now - she lived with my parents and cared for them for years. I am going to visit her soon and maybe we will listen to some of the old records - we haven't done that in a long time. I will try to remember to get a picture and post it here.
 
I have a small collection, and I do play some of them. The ones I don't play, or rarely play, belonged to my granddad. They're mostly classical-orchestral. I have 40 of those. Four beautiful old albums...actual albums, with ten 78s in each album, and each 78 is in it's own sleeve within the album.

But those ones aren't vinyl, they're shellac.

When I looked up shellac, I got this: a resin secreted by the female lac bug on trees in the forests of India and Thailand.

I bet they were kind of expensive.

condition of the vinyl and cover does affect value...
 
MY albums are mostly 60's and 70's. I looked after them my DH was not so careful with his. My son would like the albums so I should get the collection valued, some of them go for a good price. Whether I do or not time will tell, maybe just let them figure it out.

Is interesting jus to do a GOOGLE search "How much are my records worth" thanks for the reply.
 
Personally not a fan of CDs in that little plastic cover, like the feel and artwork on Long Playing records, and nothing compares in sound to an LP, and the only way to prove it, is to listen to CD and then an LP of the same artist, but each to there own, that just me, we are all different and in the end, no one is right or wrong.:cool:

"nothing compares in sound to an LP" My son says the same thing. Also regarding playing albums, my son has thousands of songs in his digital program which he gets by subscribing to a service. He's sent me some of the ones from old LPs I have and many others were put into my iTunes via CDs I had bought to replace the LPs so I can listen via iTunes (now Apple Music) and YouTube Music (formerly Google Play). I never actually compared the sound of a song on vinyl with one on CD by listening one behind the other. Perhaps I'll do that. BTW, you mentioned Technics. Here's a picture of my son at an event; his turntables are Technics and he's been using them for decades. He also bought another turntable a few months ago that he uses for another purpose. That one is a Crosley.
