Omega3 and Omega6 ratio

During my recovery I became acutely aware of nutrition and eating the right foods. Carbs, calories, vegetables, fruit,,,etc. I happened upon another important nutrition I had been neglecting that causes major issues with heart, lung, kidneys and generally everything else. I haven't been a great fish eater, I had an occasional tuna sandwich but would shun most other dishes supplying Omega-3 and reaping the benefits. I read that supplements and foods fortified with Omega-3 were basically worthless because you need to get it from natural sources.

One really great source is flaxseed, I have 2 Tbsp(s) everyday in oatmeal. I have just begun to add it twice a week in scrambled eggs. I also take 1 Tbsp at night with my 1/2 Cup of cottage cheese. I use the ground flaxseed that you can buy in bulk at most grocery outlets. I still don't eat fish but hopefully I'm adding enough Omega-3 to avoid that journey.

According to WebMD you should have a 1-1 ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 oils. Most adults have somewhere near a 1/15 ratio of O-3/O-6. Beans and walnuts are other good sources but no where near as good as flaxseed.

I shudder to think what mine was before my crises and obsessive charting. I have developed my diet based upon what works for me and have reduced the above ratio to 1/1.40 : O-3/O-6.

I use flaxseeds almost daily in my greek yogurt for their health benefits. Also take a natural triglyceride Omega 3 fish oil daily, good for so many things.

Yogurt can really sabotage a low carb/diabetic diet. Greek is so much better for you than Yoplait/fruit. My sister tried to get me to eat plain, I'd rather swim through the Sahara for 30 days than eat it plain again. As for your natural fish oil, I can only say that back many years ago my bro-n-law was taking garlic oil (probably) in excess and it took a real man to stand next to him. One reason I dislike fish is the smell, it's a hunger turnoff. If it works for you then great!

The only yogurt I'll buy anymore is Plain Greek, only ingredient is cultured nonfat milk. I'll add raw honey and natural lemon juice to it. The fish oil I use is lemon flavored, I have no issues with the taste at all, but I understand that many folks do. I don't take garlic regularly, although I use it in cooking. If I ever feel a cold coming on, I'll smash a couple of cloves and eat them raw.

And that's the crux, if you dislike the taste it doesn't matter how healthy it is for you at some point you're going to stop eating it. I dislike Zucchini squash cooked but love my wife's zucchini bread, really healthy for me. I tried several experiments mixing foods, one was taking cinnamon for high glucose, I mixed it with eggs, cottage cheese, oatmeal all good but don't let anyone tell you that it mixes well with refried beans, it had the taste of eating burnt rubber. Both good in their natural state but together, no.

SeaBreeze, do you find that the raw garlic goes down easily? I've done the same thing but I have to start with a pile of dry crackers and then sit down real fast and concentrate on keeping it down. Gives me the heaves faster than Syrup of Ipecac.

For the omega-3's, I'll also use flax seed sometimes but more usually, I use the chia seeds. They don't have to be ground up and I think they're more nutritious than flax or at least that's what I read on one site when I Googled it. Walnuts sparingly (thyroid issues) and when I make a salad dressing, I will use flax oil. The one drawback to flax is that you have to grind it up to get the benefits and it goes rancid easily once it's ground....okay two drawbacks.

Debby, I am about to open (2) 5-oz. cans of salmon, Chicken of the Sea, origin, Thailand. Is that a less safe way, in your opinion, of getting the omega-3 than supplements? This omega-6 mentioned, I've never heard of. imp

I've really only done the raw garlic thing a couple of times Debby, I rarely get colds anymore, but it did work for me when I did. I think I tried Chia Seeds in the past, and had an issue with them getting stuck between my teeth. What I really like is Hemp Hearts too on my yogurt, but same problem as with the Chia. I considered it medicine and didn't have a problem getting the garlic down quickly.

I wonder if raw garlic is more effective than cooked.

I like to wrap whole garlic bulbs in foil and bake about 15-20 minutes, maybe more, then squeeze out the cloves and eat on toast or crackers. Really good.
