This is not an anti-gun tirade. It is an anti stupid parent tirade:

"911 calls released by police reveal the harrowing moments after a toddler shot her 21-year-old mother in the head during a Zoom call with her horrified colleagues.
Shamaya Lynn died Wednesday from the fatal gunshot to the head after her toddler found a loaded handgun left unsecured in the family’s Altamonte Springs, Florida apartment and shot her, police said."

You wouldn't believe how many morons on Facebook said, "This would never happen in my house because I teach my kids gun safety."

Uh......right. A toddler is 1 - 3 years old. Old enough to have access to guns & old enough to learn gun safety.
Yeah.....your toddlers also drive & operate power saws, too.

I'm so disgusted by what you just divulged, @AnnieA that I want to curse! Please tell me his parents were/are being prosecuted for this.
Here, in CA, it's the law. And at the time of purchase, you have to sign a Dept. of Justice document under penalty of perjury that you have an approved safe or lockboxes and also that you read the law about criminal prosecution if a child is injured by your firearm. Plus, there are signs posted everywhere in the store. But (like most such laws) they are not enforced, so they're meaningless.

Somewhere not that long ago, I was reading an article on parents/guns/gun safes. All the parents with gun safes insisted they kept all guns and ammo locked up, and never let their kids play with guns on their own.

Then the researchers interviewed the kids separately. Something like 95% of the kids from ages 5 through 16 said they knew where the keys were, how to open the safe, and a majority of them admitted they had played with the guns when their parents weren't around.

I read about over the weekend and meant to post about it. How horrible for her colleagues who witnessed that and for her family! That child will be scarred by the knowledge that she killed her own mother! At the same time I read about that I read about a 3 year old who was shot and killed by a 5 year old!

Someone on here was talking about "responsible gun owners". What percentage of gun owners fit in that category?

Gun "accidents" are likely to become more common. In the past year, there have been over 8 million "first time" gun owners, due to concerns about rising crime, etc. Many of them probably have minimal firearm skills, and are keeping their guns in a location where they can quickly access them. If they have children, childhood "curiosity" could easily become a family tragedy.

Equally stupid there was a five year old child left in his mothers car and died of extreme heat. I picture the woman exists the car, walks to the door and opens it then closes it. She goes about her business as usual and not a single thought about the child.

Mine don't have keys; they're all combos. If keys are found, it's no different than leaving guns lying around. And the cheaper key-operated safes & lock boxes can be easily broken into.

Other than being cheap (and stupid), there is no excuse for leaving guns where they can quickly access them. Mine take exactly 1.5 seconds to access but no one else has access: I've had people tell me they can't afford it. Yeah......right. They bought a $900.00 gun but can't afford a $300.00 lock box.............

I really don't know what percentage of gun owners are responsible. I don't know what percentage of drivers are responsible, either. From what I've witnessed, maybe 50%. I can't fix all the stupid out there; No one can. I can only be responsible myself.
Here's a police officer who left his gun in the back seat of his car - with his 3-year-old child. The child fired the gun & the cop was permanently paralyzed:

Similarly, I saw a bit of research done with a hidden camera. One by one, children were left alone in a "waiting room" with a (fake) gun on the table. All the parents said their children had been taught to never touch a gun and all the children touched it. Many also picked it up and pulled the trigger.

I remember that piece years ago; I think it was on "Dateline, NBC." I was not surprised. Many parents think their kids are "Special," "Smart," & would "Never disobey them." They are in denial - big time.
My sister is one such parent. At the time, her son was 12. I suggested over & over to her that she shouldn't keep her gun on a night stand because everyone in the house has access to it.
She'd always reply: "Oh, don't give me that; MY son is much smarter than other kids; he would never do anything stupid."
I reminded her that the gun was also accessible to all his friends who visit.
She replied, "He's smart enough not to have stupid friends."
Later, her son told me "My friend picked up the gun & pointed it at my head....as a joke" - the way most teens joke.
I reminded my sister that the only reason she still had a son was because his friend didn't pull the trigger.
She bought a lock box the next day. But her denial almost cost.

Many years ago, I had a girl friend, for a while. She had a brother, who got the idea we were "bros". We weren't. He was a big idiot. One day, he showed at my apartment with a gun. You just knew this idiot was going to do something stupid with that gun. I was so afraid he was going to kill me. He was going to shoot me by accident, he was that stupid. I finally got him out the door. Who in the hell was dumb enough to sell this idiot a gun? About a week later, he was in a bar, and decided to light his cigarette by shooting off the end. It's not only kids, who can't handle guns.
